The Human Impact of Climate Change

These activities for ages 11-16 explore the human impact of the climate emergency and provide new spaces, approaches and opportunities for climate education and social action.

This resource frames the climate emergency as a human rights and people-centered issue and supports teachers to promote a sense of agency and empowerment within young people.

This in turn is recognized as one strategy to help young people manage eco-anxiety, as well as disillusionment and disengagement with climate issues.

The resource includes five activities:

Activity 1 - Climate change, human rights and equality - An activity to introduce the links between climate change and human rights

Activity 2 - Climate justice - A mystery activity to demonstrate the inequalities inherent in the global interconnectedness of climate change. All people are affected in some way by the climate emergency but who you are and where you are in the world matters

Activity 3 – Critically thinking about evidence -An activity to examine case study films and make conclusions about which human rights are most threatened by climate change, which groups in society are most affected and what the solutions are.

Activity 4 – A climate consequences wheel - A consequences wheel activity using evidence from one case study film to make inferences about the different impacts of climate change on members of a community with different personal characteristics (for example: male or female).

Activity 5 – The climate game - A role play activity for which a clear space, either indoors or outdoors, is required. Learners compare the impacts of climate change on people from different backgrounds and in different circumstances. For some participants, the impacts of climate change overlap and are amplified. This strengthens learners’ understanding of intersectionality (interconnectedness).

My action plan is currently focusing on including questions for deeper understanding (Blooms Taxonomy) in both Science and ELA 8. I wanted to also focus on using the 6 Thinking Hats of Debono alongside Blooms Taxonomy question in ELA to guide but not direct discussion on specific topics (Black Negative, Yellow Positive, Blue control, etc.) as well as integrating basic technology into PE games (Heart rate monitors, mileage/stepper counters during activity to measure distance covered, etc.) with a focus on eventually using more in depth tech in PE (QR codes, etc.)

We have been using more Inquiry and Project Based Learning in our Grade 4 Social Studies class at OES this year, with the students learning to think critically and work collaboratively as they investigated the “big questions” tied to the SS outcomes. They were encouraged to reach beyond the classroom and access resource people outside the school in their research. The Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum is based on Saskatchewan content and we were fortunate to connect with some excellent sources and learning partners from all around the province.

Browse the classroom resources for access to high-quality videos, lesson plans, media creation ideas, and other standards-aligned content. Or read stories written and shared by other educators, and get inspiration and ideas for your classroom. Activities focus on creative use and analysis of media. For example, one teacher-created post describes how she used memes to teach media literacy. Another wrote about having students share their culture through media creation. Developing Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Computer and Digital Technologies.

During the 2013-2014 school year, teachers in the Sun West School Division accessed
four half days of professional development in their own schools to create awareness of
the 21st century competencies in order to prepare our learners for an ever-changing
future.

In each school, Learning Coaches will facilitate the days, working with teachers to
explore the seven competencies and to assist educators in implementing critical
thinking and collaboration strategies into classrooms.

The days are intended to provide engaging, hands-on, authentic learning experiences
that allow each teacher to “start where they are”. The half day workshops have been
designed to bring teachers together, both face-to-face and virtually, to learn with and
from each other. As a community of educators, we will work collectively to shift
teaching practices to reflect 21st century models of education.

This is not “one-size fits all” professional development. Instead, these days will provide a
flexible learning environment where teachers will be able to explore aspects of critical
thinking and collaboration that has meaning for them and their classrooms.

SMART Goal: By June 2014, Sun West School Division teaching staff will:

1. Demonstrate personal growth in the understanding of critical thinking and collaboration.

2. Apply understandings of the competencies (critical thinking and collaboration) to reflect
21st century models of learning.

3. Use technology tools purposefully for teaching and learning.

4. Demonstrate a positive impact on student learning in the classroom.

Literature Circles in Lord of the Flies

For my artifact, I incorporated literature circles into the reading of the novel, Lord
of the Flies. The first step in this process was to introduce the roles to the students and
to explain what was expected of them. Then, I split the students into their groups of four
using a random group generator (groups can be adjusted based on numbers, but four
worked best in my class). Once students knew what was expected of them, they talked
with their group members to determine who was doing what role for the first two
chapters. From there, we would read two chapters and I would allow the students time
to complete their role sheet (I also encouraged them to do this as they were reading
along, especially for quotes and vocab) and then they would meet with their group to
share their role with the other members. As the teacher, I would circulate between the
groups while they were sharing to listen to them and to provide any input/clarifications.
We would then repeat this process after each two chapters (there are 12 chapters in
total in the novel).

This knowledge is important not only on Earth, but also on the International Space Station (ISS), the future Lunar Gateway, and as long-duration space travel progresses, maybe even on Mars!"

"Students and educators will study the key environmental conditions that are monitored and managed to keep astronauts healthy on the ISS. Students will measure environmental conditions such as temperature, CO2, and relative humidity in their classroom and submit the data to a national database. After developing their understanding of optimal ranges, and collecting data on their current environment, students will make a plan for classroom environmental improvement. The national Living Space database allows students to compare their classroom data with information from other participating classrooms in Canada as well as data from the ISS!"

So, let me ask you the question: How often do we let students “work the problem” in our schools and classrooms?

Do we give students a chance to figure it out on their own or in a small group? Do we challenge them to solve a challenge in a fixed amount of time? Do we let them struggle and fail to the point where they have to work the problem and find a solution?

With PL - Now every student was “working their own problem” and stumbling, struggling, and fighting to find a solution of how to learn, make, create, and launch an idea out into the world.

“The Martian” is a great example of working the problem. He has to use a multitude of 21st Century Skills, along with his team, and the people back on Earth to work together to survive and get him home.
