Rating
0.0 stars

An interactive applet and associated web page that provide step-by-step instructions on how to find the center of a circle using any right-angled object, such as a piece of paper. The method uses Thales Theorem to draw two diameters, which intersect at the circle center. The animation can be run either continuously like a video, or single stepped to allow classroom discussion and thought between steps. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. Flooding, Oh My!

This is a 21 day unit on the topic of floods. Students will plan and prepare for what might happen in the event of a flood in our area. We have had floods in the past that have affected the Walterville School, its campus, and the surrounding areas. Using this as a springboard, students will discuss the effects of flooding, do research and interview family members who have experienced flooding, and then discuss possible ways to prevent significant damage on the buildings and surrounding areas. They will then design a barrier that could protect an area from damage for a period of time. Students will need materials to conduct experiments. We have listed these in the lesson plan. We have also included a trip to the Leaburg Dam so that students can learn about dams and their uses. We plan on teaching this unit in the fall.

FlyLab JS
Rating
0.0 stars

FlyLab JS is an educational application for learning the principles of genetic inheritance. Users design crosses between female and male fruit flies carrying one or more genetic mutations. They can make hypotheses for the mode of inheritance of genetic traits and test their hypotheses by selecting fruit flies with different visible mutations, mating them, and analyzing the phenotypic ratios of the offspring. Results can be recorded into an online notebook which can be exported as a web page for later use.

With FlyLab JS, it is possible to study multiple generations of offspring, and perform testcrosses and backcrosses. FlyLab JS is a versatile program; it can be used to learn elementary genetic principles such as dominance and recessive alleles, and Mendelian ratios, or more complex concepts such as sex-linkage, epistasis, recombination, and genetic mapping.

An interactive applet and associated web page that show the definition and properties of the focus points (foci) of an ellipse. The applet has an ellipse whose major and minor axes can be dragged. The applet shows the location of the foci, which are always on the major axis, and shows how they move with variation of the axis lengths. The web page also has a formula for calculating the location of the foci. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate full angles (those equal to 360 deg). The applet presents an angle (initially full) that the user can adjust by dragging the end points of the line segments forming the angle. As it changes it shows the angle measure and a message that indicate which type of angle it is. There a software 'detents' that make it easy capture exact angles such as 90 degrees and 180 degrees The message and angle measures can be turned off to facilitate classroom discussion. The text on the page has links to other pages defining each angle type in depth. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector.
