Your body is made of cells -- but how does a single cell know to become part of your nose, instead of your toes? The answer is in your body's instruction book: DNA. Joe Hanson compares DNA to detailed manual for building a person out of cells -- with 46 chapters (chromosomes) and hundreds of thousands of pages covering every part of you.

The Declining Magnetic Field
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

This is an activity about the declining strength of Earth's magnetic field. Learners will review a graph of magnetic field intensity and calculate the amount by which the field has changed its intensity in the last century, the rate of change of its intensity, and when the field should decrease to zero strength at the current rate of change. Learners will also use evidence from relevant sources to create a conjecture on the effects on Earth of a vanished magnetic field. Access to information sources about Earth's magnetic field strength is needed for this activity. This is Activity 7 in the Exploring Magnetism on Earth teachers guide.

Depression
Rating
0.0 stars

Depression is considered to be a disorder of mood. Individuals who are depressed, describe low mood that has persisted for longer than two weeks. In mild forms of depression, individuals may not feel bad all day but still describe a dismal outlook and a sense of gloom. Their mood may lift with a positive experience, but fall again with even a minor disappointment. In severe depression, a low mood will persist throughout the day, failing to lift even when pleasant things occur. The low mood may fluctuate during the day such that it may be worse in the morning and relatively better in the afternoon. This is called ‘diurnal variation,’ which often accompanies a more severe type of depression.

Differentiated Assessment

Differentiation is what we do to enable more students to meet outcomes. It is the way in which we respond to the learning differences our students have which means it is also an ongoing reflective process.

We gather data before, during and after instruction in order to choose the right tools in order to reach the needs of our learners. The teacher who plans instruction to accommodate the differences among student’s, designs or chooses the best pre-assessment tools. The results are then used to enhance the instruction and learning experiences on the journey.

Digital Citizenship Pre-Built Lessons
Rating
0.0 stars

Common Sense Education offers free pre-built lessons for K-12 surrounding digital citizenship and staying safe online. Their lessons include a teacher's guide, lesson slides, activities with answer keys, videos, and songs for younger grades to help deliver the lesson. Teachers do need to create an account in order to access the lessons but it is free and you have total access once you sign up. I personally use this in connection with my Media Studies course and love the lessons that they offer. Super simple, and relevant to the students and their interactions online. They also offer a tips sheet and a parent connection sheet for each of their small themed units.

Digital Driver's Licence
Rating
0.0 stars

The Digital Licence is an interactive resource that challenges young people to examine their interactions online and to think more critically. Referencing current trends and applications, the resource helps students and educators on their path toward informed digital citizenship.

It features about eight scenarios, tailored by age level, that cover topics including what constitutes copyright violation and how to stay safe online. Each student registers individually and then progresses through background material related to a given scenario, which might include a video or examining a given situation. When a student feels confident she has mastered a topic, she can take a "prove it" quiz that puts her knowledge to the test. A passing score is 80 percent or greater. Scores, answer resets and attempts are logged for educators, who can follow each student's progress in an admin toolbar. Educators can further specify which scenarios will be required to earn a DDL.

At Sun West you can log into this using your Sun West Office 365 credentials.

Discussion / Debate on Post-Secondary Debt Loads
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

This activity allows the students to discuss the burden of student loans and financing post-secondary education. An additional aspect to this activity is the mental health aspect regarding heavy debt loads for post-secondary. The discussion could include a debate on student loans, who is responsible and can a student "walk away" from this debt? Should the government pay for post-secondary education for everyone? If yes, would you be willing to pay more taxes for free post-secondary education?Students often finance their post-secondary education, which can be very expensive over many years. How does a student pay this debt back if they are unable to finish their program, especially in expensive programs such as medicine or law?
