Students will analyze "Man with a Hoe" by Jean-Francois Millet, and learn how the artist's use of shape and space creates emphasis. Students will discuss their interpretations of the painting and provide visual evidence to back up their ideas. They will create a persona poem that demonstrates their interpretation of how the man in the painting feels. Students will then illustrate their understanding of how shape and space creates emphasis by drawing a person in their family who works hard.

This unit integrates ELA and Arts Ed Outcomes in the hopes of the students being able to show what they know through the use of the text, “If You’re Not From the Prairie”.

2. Opening activity: Give students the line “If You’re Not From the Prairie”…. In partners, have students generate a list of things that are unique to Saskatchewan. Encourage them to think of something the other groups will not have on their lists. Post these lists. After reading “If You’re Not From the Prairie”, compare the student-generated lists to the ideas mentioned in the poem. Check off how many student ideas were included in the poem. (Could make it a competition, depending on the class, and have a ‘Saskatchewan' for the pair of students with the most ideas included in the poem)

Students will examine two paintings by Claude Monet, "Still Life with Flowers and Fruit" and "Sunrise." They will apply their understanding of prepositions by writing poetry using prepositional phrases inspired by both paintings.

Homebound-A Reading and Conversation with Cree poet Francine Merasty on the healing power of poetry. With grace and wit, Francine discusses how has helped her deal with the trauma of residential schools and celebrate the strength of her family.

Students take poetic license when they interpret William Carlos William's poem "The Red Wheelbarrow" to help create a poem of their own.

Students will be singing the blues in this lesson in which they identify themes from "The Gift of the Magi" and write and present blues poetry based on those themes.

Students examine two of Dorothea Lange's photographs in relation to the universal theme of a journey. They make connections between the photographs and poems about journey and write about a journey in their own lives.

In this lesson, students use blogs to hold discussions about the effect of the factors of culture, history, and environment on Latino poetry.

Biography
Leah Marie Dorion is an interdisciplinary Metis artist raised in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. A teacher, painter, filmmaker and published writer, Leah views her Metis heritage as providing her with a unique bridge for knowledge between all people. Leah holds a Bachelor of Education, Bachelor of Arts, and Master of Arts degree. She has numerous creative projects to her credit, including academic papers for the Royal Commission of Aboriginal Peoples, books for children, gallery showings of her art works, and numerous video documentaries that showcase Metis culture and history. Leah’s paintings honour the spiritual strength of Aboriginal women and the sacred feminine. Leah believes that women play a key role in passing on vital knowledge for all of humanity which is deeply reflected in her artistic practice. She believes women are the first teachers to the next generation.

Students across the board will get a kick out of researching a historical figure from the American Revolution to create an acrostic poem.

Students explore letter poems and experiment with writing letters as poems, using the placement of line breaks to enhance rhythm, sound, meaning, and appearance.
