In this lesson, students will collaboratively investigate some datasets and use visualization tools to “discover a data story.” The lesson assumes that students know how to use some kind of visualization tool - in the previous lesson we used the charting tools of a basic spreadsheet program. Students should be working with a partner but without much teacher hand-holding. Most of the time should be spent with students poking around the data and trying to discover connections and trends using data visualization tools. It is up to them to discover a trend, make a chart, and accurately write about it.

Card and board game kits for many of the Comox Valley Schools (SD71, B.C.) middle-grade Core French units (also searchable on the Resource Bank). All would be adaptable for younger and older students. There are also flash card sets with the units themselves.

In this Caribbean Cinderella story, Cendrillon is treated as a servant by her step-mother and half-sister. Nannin, the gogmother, uses a magic wand to ready Cendrillon for a ball, where Cendrillon meets a rich man's son, Paul, who falls in love with her and finds her when she is lost to him.

This lesson provides teachers with support for using text-dependent questions to help students derive big ideas and key understandings while developing vocabulary using the children's novel, Charlotte's Web. A story of friendship and loyalty between Wilbur, a spring pic and a grey spider named Charlotte. Wilbur learns that he is being fattened for slaughter in the fall. Wilbur is at first disgusted by the fact that charlotte eats flies, but comes to both appreciate and love her.

This thematic unit from Comox Valley Schools (SD71) in B.C. is aimed at Grade 6 Core French students, but is suitable for younger grades and would be easily adaptable for older ones. "Cocoa Ice" is set in the early 1800s and describes the exchange that occurs when a trading ship from Maine travels to the Caribbean village of Santo Domingo. The story is told in two parts, each part narrated by a girl who lives in one of these locations.

Kids can use Codeable Crafts to create simple animated stories. Give kids a general theme (for example, what did you do over the summer break?) and let them use their imaginations to create stories on that theme. Talk about storytelling, such as following a story arc and introducing characters. Kids can work on their language and verbal skills as they narrate their story. Save the stories and show them to the class. For a tech or computer class, Codeable Crafts can be a starter app for introducing programming. Carefully explain and explore what each coding block does, and give kids lots of room to experiment on their own.

After reading several books from the My Weird School Series by Dan Gutman, my classroom decided that it would be fun to create our own weird school story. We had decided from the beginning that the main character of our story would be our colony supervisor, Mrs. Barclay. Since all titles in the Weird School Series rhyme, we thought it was only appropriate to also have a title that rhymed and so the class created Mrs. Barclay is Sparkly.

This project was a collaborative effort. We knew that we wanted each grade to have their own chapter in the story. Each group of students was responsible for brainstorming ideas for their chapter. I then helped them develop their ideas into a chapter. Each grade was also responsible for providing the illustrations for their chapters.

Students develop a ceremony to honor a person or commemorate an event in history.

Use the "Slinky Test" to get students to start thinking about sentence length and variety.
This resource provides a video to explain the strategy and a number of supports to help you teach students when to use sentences of varied length to improve their writing.

In this work of fiction, Rooster and his eager friends set out to make strawberry shortcake, a recipe from Little Red Hen's cookbook. Rooster is glad to have help, but none of his friends know how to cook, so Rooster forges ahead to teach the helpers the basics of cooking and baking, with very funny results

"Cows in the Parlor: A Visit to a Dairy Farm" is an expository article about the daily running of a dairy farm. Students learn about a day in the life of a cow, Maggie, including what she eats, how shes milked, and other interesting facts.

In this story, Coyote builds a ladder to the Heavens and moves the stars to make pictures of himself and his animal friends. After viewing the constellations, the animals decree that Coyote is the most clever and crafty of them all.
