Unit
overview

The unit will have students create a photographic
journal consisting of 15 to 30 photographs. Accompanying the photographic
journal will be a written journal. Students will choose a subject, prepare an
outline and then spend 5-10 days documenting the subject. Students will write a
brief synopsis for each photo taken and end the unit with a presentation
(physical or digital) of their work.

High School Edition is designed for middle- and high-school students and provides access to age-appropriate, authoritative digital content for classroom assignments. Learners can research magazines, journals, newspapers, and reference books covering a wide range of subjects, from science, history, and literature to political science, sports, and environmental studies.

This journal was created by Sue Mills, a Sun West Counselor, to help us find the good in everyday.

In this unit, students explore a variety of resources—texts, images, sounds, photos, and other artifacts—to learn more about the Holocaust. Beginning with journal writings and a picture book to introduce the central issues, the unit focuses on student-centered inquiry. Students explore a range of print and non-print resources through extensive online inquiry activities. Progressing from individual work to a group learning project, the unit culminates in publishing the group's findings in topic-based newspapers.

The lesson includes complete lists of picture books, read-aloud books, reference texts, and online sites and collections that allow teachers to customize the activities to fit the available resources and students' specific research interests.
