This is another of my students' favourite assignments. The students create a container that matches one of the characters and fill it with items (or pictures of the items) that character would have or use. Tags are attached to the items that include descriptive writing, page references, and the reasons the item is important to the play.

Novel Study Collaboration Using One Note
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted

In the past students had difficulty keeping their focus on academic collaboration when using One Note. It was key for me to help the students frame thought-provoking questions in their entries that would invite valuable comments. Also when commenting, it was important that the students knew the difference between social and academic writing. A true educational online collaboration is not about socializing, but about students and teacher helping each other grow in their learning. This was a different writing space than students are accustomed to. At the end of this unit the students had explored other student authored pages, talked about online safety, online identity and cyber bullying and worked together to create a display showcasing their novel study collaboration.

Shakespeare for Everyone! (or use to teach any novel!)

This resource is full of activities to be done before, during and after reading a play (at grade level!).

Shakespeare was meant to be seen and celebrated! The approach should be fun and engaging - and open to even our young students.

All activities can be edited to suit your grade level and meet your needs. Many of these would also make excellent book reports for any novel!

"The Story of Harriet Tubman: Freedom Train" by Dorthy Sterling as a classroom novel study with some resources & activities.
Guided Reading Level T
Lexile® Measure 910L
DRA Level 50

Harriet Tubman knew mostly only hard work and hunger in her life. Born into slavery, she spent the majority of her life helping countless others escape it.

Freedom Train recounts the story of Harriet Tubman, who led hundreds of slaves through a system called the Underground Railroad, a complex organization of private homes reaching from the South all the way to Canada. Contemporary readers may not be aware of how dangerous Harriet Tubman's work was, and just how much she risked for others. This is a story of an inspiring American hero written in an inspired style.

Is someone in the class really unhappy with how the novel ends? Does someone want to extend the story or modernize it, or make fun of it? Challenge him or her to write an alternate ending, sequel to, modern version or parody of the story. Be sure you give them your expectations clearly before they begin, and have them follow the writing process. This assignment could even be turned into a video.
An example of an Alternate Ending Planner that was used with Grade 5-8 students is included below.
