Assistive Technology (AT) is any piece of technology that helps a student with or without a disability increase or maintain his or her level of functioning. Ex. Speech-to-text, text-to-speech and word prediction software.
Encourage students to become “Writing Thieves” Ruth Culham suggests that we pickpocket our way through the world of print and non-print as writers, not just readers. Be a cat burglar of great writing. Bring the great treasures you find into your teaching and learning. Use things that jump out at you, that are unforgettable. When you get excited by something an author writes about or the way they write it, steal bit of it in the hope that you can improve your own writing –BE A WRITING THIEF!

Elkonin boxes, or “sound boxes”, provide a visual representation of how words are segmented into individual letter-sounds. They help students see how a word is divided into its sound parts. This will help students with the alphabetic principle, decoding, spelling, and phoneme awareness.
They help students build phonological awareness by segmenting words into sounds or syllables.
They teach students how to count the number of phonemes in the word (not always the number of letters).
They help students better understand the alphabetic principle in decoding and spelling.
Saskatchewan Ministry of Education draft English Language Arts Writing Continuum 1-12 including: goals, outcomes, essential skills, and texts, as well as, before, during, and after prompts.

No Red Ink is an online site that helps students specifically with grammar. It gives quizzes and exercises tailored to that students’ interests (sports, celebrities, etc) and offers a number of different differentiated platforms and games.
You have to sign up to use this for your students. Some features are locked for paid accounts, but that being said, there are a number of excellent activities for free as well!
