Students will analyze and describe a painting depicting a family. They will discuss similarities and differences between the setting of the painting and where they live. Then students will create a sculpture of their family doing an activity together and also create a diorama of a room in their home.

Using a "Thirty-Second Look" activity, students will look closely at and describe the painting A Centennial of Independence. The students will read their ideas and note line, shape, and other details. Then students will create a favorite outdoor memory inspired by the painting, using crayons and the elements of art to guide their work. They will also make connections to the theme of "teamwork."

Students will focus on how one artist tells the story of Joseph using continuous narrative. By observing and discussing visual details such as color and movement found in the painting, students write about what they think is happening. Students are encouraged to use the actions they observed in the painting to create and write a new story with a new character, and then illustrate them in their own continuous narrative.

Students will observe images of gardens, visualizing and imagining the shapes, colors, textures, sounds, and smells of the plants, flowers, and other objects in a garden. They will also write about and sketch their observations. Students will then design and create a model of their own imagined garden.

Students participate in a "thirty-second look," followed by a class discussion about Jan Brueghel's painting "The Entry of the Animals into Noah's Ark". Students then use description words and complete sentences to write about their favorite animal in the painting; draw the animal using line, color, and shape; and present their work to the class.

Note: This lesson was designed for students with autism. The students will review a few elements of art, specifically colors, shapes, and different types of lines. They will identify these elements in Vincent van Gogh's painting Irises. The students will then practice drawing different types of lines and shapes in different colors, and will use these elements of art to produce an original crayon-resist piece inspired by Irises.

Students study how Dorothea Lange tells stories related to children. They practice telling their own written and visual stories in response to Lange's images.

Students will discuss works of art that have grotesque elements and symmetry in their design. They will identify symmetry and line in grotesques. Students will create symmetrical designs for a pilgrim bottle and also design a door panel using grotesques. They will then analyze William Blake's poem "The Tiger" and write their own grotesque-inspired poetry.

Students will discuss the sculpture "Python Killing a Gnu" by Antoine-Louis Barye. They will use their imagination to visualize a setting for the python depicted in sculpture. Then they will describe their setting, sculpt a clay snake, and create their setting using mixed media.
