This is a collection of resources to support the development of literacy. Literacy is foundational to students’ academic and future success. Literacy includes reading, writing and oral language. A substantial portion of your day should be spent explicitly teaching literacy strategies and skills during your ELA classes. Additionally, students should also be provided with opportunities to practice literacy strategies and skills in all subject areas to help work towards mastery.
English Language Arts instruction should be evidence based and align with Structured Literacy (that follows the Science of Reading). Instruction should address both parts of the Scarborough Reading Rope and include Word Recognition (Phonological Awareness, Decoding & High Frequency Words), as well as Language Comprehension (Background Knowledge, Vocabulary, Language Structure, Verbal Reasoning & Literacy Knowledge). Together both parts of the rope develop fluency and result in Reading Comprehension as skills become increasingly strategic and automatic.
As students develop Word Recognition skills they move from looking at the sound, to the syllable to the morpheme. While you will need to utilize all of these features while working with words, these grades are wonderful time to start introducing students to morphology. Your school will have a copy of Morpheme Magic which can support you in leveraging learning how words work with your students.
The Writing Revolution is another support that your school should have a copy of. Lessons to integrate writing into all content areas has been developed by teachers for sentences, note-taking, paragraphs and larger pieces of writing.

Each summer, students lose critical math and literacy skills, which can widen the achievement gap among students. To prevent this “summer slide,” EVERFI has partnered with Major League Baseball to develop a continuous and engaging learning experience that prepares students of all backgrounds to enter the next school year on track. The 18-week program, targeted to 4th and 5th graders, unlocks activities at regular intervals and offers rewards for progress and consistency along the way. Students engage with content that reinforces critical math and language skills while enjoying the freedom and motivation of a baseball-themed, game-based learning experience.
This can be used throughout the year as extra reinforcement for students.

This series of lesson plans, built around the first-person narrative of a 12-year-old Inuk boy, will help you and your students appreciate life in the Inuit community of Salluit, in the northern part of Nunavik, Northern Quebec. Although designed for students from 9 to 12 years of age, some of the lesson plans and strategies in this unit can be adapted for other grade levels. Suggested activities and lists of research resources offer exciting and engaging opportunities to learn more about the history, customs and traditions of Inuit in Canada.
The aim of this booklet is to enhance the knowledge of students about the history, cultures and traditions of Inuit and, in particular, those who live in Canada's northern Inuit community of Salluit.
By completing the lessons in this booklet, students will be able to:
- express an appreciation for the strong traditions and unique culture of the Inuit people, in various ways - describe the various developments that affected Canada's Arctic from its early history to the present - locate the community of Salluit and its neighbouring Inuit municipalities on a map of Canada - relate the similarities and differences between life in Salluit and life in their own community.
Through Mala's Eyes...Life in an Inuit Community offers educators opportunities to address provincial learning outcomes in the social studies, history and geography portions of their curriculum. Given the nature of the suggested activities, students will also address learning outcomes in language, the arts and mathematics.
*Audio recordings of student readings are available through the website, but are not hyperlinked in the pdf document. *With some slight adaptations, this unit can be completed without technology.
