You will find everything you need here to use STEM challenges to introduce and teach your students 21st Century Skills.

Before each activity look at the "What Skills Do I Need?" attachment and discuss what needs to be done. Then show them the specific challenge - plan and do it! After have the kids complete the related reflection. All files below.

Thinking Routines Toolbox from Project Zero

This amazing toolbox organizes Thinking Routines into categories.

When you open a routine, go to the section for Resource Links to access an explanation/lesson on how to use this tool.

Tools or strategies are divided into these categories (a few examples are listed but there are many more):

Project-based learning, or PBL, challenges students to design and engage in more authentic, extended, and complex learning. But while PBL is a trusted strategy for increasing student engagement and learning, it's not easy to orchestrate. There are tons of moving pieces, and if you're doing it right, students will be engaging in a variety of interest-driven projects all with various needs and on different schedules. So how do you manage it all? Tech can be a huge help. This list gathers some useful productivity and organization tools that can help both teachers and students keep track of, finish, and assess projects. There are also a few tools designed specifically for PBL, as well as plug-and-play PBL experiences.

Summary I began my 21st Century journey this year hoping to create a classroom blog. My main goal was to allow parents a glimpse into their child’s daily life at school. I pictured students blogging daily about what we were up to in class and parents commenting and asking questions regularly. This, unfortunately, was not the case. I encountered problem after problem until the idea just fizzled by the wayside. So, on to the next idea! A few years ago, I attended a session by a teacher who was doing stop-motion animation with her class. I latched onto that idea and quickly purchased the iMotion app. I started making videos with my five year old son (who loved it!!!) and soon felt comfortable enough to introduce the technology to my class. The students were very excited to try it! We had only one problem… we only had one ipad. Several students got the opportunity to create a stop-motion animation as part of a book report project. (They did a stop-motion animation in place of creating a diorama.) However, most students did not get a chance to try it due to time limitations with only one ipad. Out of the students who did not get to create a stop-motion animation, a couple of them asked if they could create a digital diorama using Minecraft. Several other students overheard and wanted to do one too. I was curious to see what they would do so I allowed them to try it. The results were fantastic!!! We connected each students’ personal device to the SmartBoard to present their dioramas to the rest of the class. (We learned that we can’t use the airwatch to have a “live” diorama on the SmartBoard, but we fixed that problem by taking still pictures (screenshots) of the scene and displaying it that way.)

Work Place and Apprenticeship Math 30- What Bank To Use When Starting A Small Business

In this lesson student will be developing an idea for a possible small business that they would like to start and run. Once they have developed an idea for a business they will have to research what services different financial institutions offered in their area, or the province. Once they have finished seeing what services are out there, students will then have to decide what institution they would like to use, and determine what requirements they need to meet from the bank. Depending on how much time you would like to spend on this you could have students even come up with a loan proposal and a business plan as well. This can be done in partners or the students can work on the alone as well.

A recent blog by Grant Wiggins affirmed what I have long believed about creativity: it is a 21st-century skill we can teach and assess. Creativity fosters deeper learning, builds confidence and creates a student ready for college and career.

However, many teachers don't know how to implement the teaching and assessment of creativity in their classrooms. While we may have the tools to teach and assess content, creativity is another matter, especially if we want to be intentional about teaching it as a 21st-century skill. In a PBL project, some teachers focus on just one skill, while others focus on many. Here are some strategies educators can use tomorrow to get started teaching and assessing creativity -- just one more highly necessary skill in that 21st-century toolkit.
