Readiness Assessments

This collection features resources to support the use of readiness assessments.

Any assessment that examines a student's readiness to learn is considered a readiness assessment.  These assessments may look at academic readiness (math, reading, writing), skills readiness (21st century skills, learning styles, etc.), or attitudinal (grit, growth mindset) readiness.  They may include diagnostic or learning/attitude inventories.  The resources in this collection will help you to determine the readiness of your students in a variety of areas including Math, English Language Arts, 21st Century Skills, Growth Mindset, Learning Style, Personality Type, Creativity Style, etc.

Learner Profiles can provide a great deal of information about student readiness.  Be sure to visit the Learner Profile Collection (https://resourcebank.ca/curated-collections/35) for more resources and to examine what should be done with Learner Profiles for students. Information can be found in that collection for teaching students to study and learn based on their learner profile.  It is essential that once the learner profiles are created that they are revisited regularly with students to help them do their best learning.  Learner Profliles can be a tool to develop classroom community, empathy as well as metacogntion for students.

Please note that readiness assessments should be redone at the start of each school year, as our skills, learning styles and personalities can evolve and shift as we develop and have new experiences as both children and adults.

Wordwall is great for making (and finding) quizzes and activities for content courses! It is super user-friendly, and it has some cool themes too!

Take a look at this blog by Leanne Hintz, where she has used a few already-created "Wordwall" activities and then created some unique ones of her own. (https://ourlifewelllivedleannehintz.com/2023/05/17/wordwall/)

To use Wordwall, all you need to do is create a free account. The basic membership allows you to make five interactive activities (for online use … no printables unfortunately) perfect for the classroom or an online environment. A basic membership is just $8 per month and allows for unlimited creations (that can also become printables as well).

A companion document to the Saskatchewan English Language Arts Curriculum-Grades 1, 2, 3

"Saskatchewan Reads is a companion document to the English Language Arts Grades 1, 2, and 3 curricula. It was created based on sound research, specifically in reading, focusing on instructional approaches, assessment and intervention. Some of the key authors referenced include; Allington, Miller, Fountas and Pinnell, Davies, Cooper, Fisher & Frey to name a few. Furthermore, it showcases the diversity of promising practises that have proven successful in school divisions and First Nations communities within Saskatchewan. Some examples include: Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM), Reader’s Workshop, Balanced Literacy, Scaffolded/Guided Reading, Levelled Literacy Intervention and Running Records along with many others across the province.

The intent of Saskatchewan Reads is to provide a framework for school divisions and systems to build their own reading initiative that meets the needs of their unique student population. This document provides practical supports to teachers as they ensure their students are successful. It is intended to develop increased capacity at the school and system level with respect to improving student reading. The online version of Saskatchewan Reads saskatchewanreads.wordpress.com will be evergreen with live links and video of examples to clearly illustrate the many promising practices within Saskatchewan. The intent of the online version is to bring Saskatchewan Reads alive.

The motivation to create Saskatchewan Reads came from the need to improve student reading in this province as outlined in the Premier’s vision document, “Saskatchewan Plan for Growth: Vision 2020 and Beyond”. All 28 school boards in the province and the Government of Saskatchewan approved the development and deployment of Saskatchewan Reads.

Several Saskatchewan publications, along with documents from other provinces, were referenced when creating Saskatchewan Reads. As a result of this work, and more importantly, the skill and talent of our teachers in this province, our students will become proficient readers."
