Enseignement sur le plastique dans les océans
Unrestricted Use
CC BY
Rating
0.0 stars

Entrepreneurship 30: Teaching Franchises with Graphic Novels
Unrestricted Use

The students were starting a lesson on franchising and how it can be considered a form of entrepreneurship. We discussed the benefits and drawbacks of being either a franchisor or a franchisee. To engage the students into some heavier content I found a graphic novel, “Tales o f Garcon, The Franchise Players”, on the website Teachers pay Teachers. This was a great resource meant for business/ economics students. I found the first 2 chapters fit perfectly into an entrepreneurship course. The first chapter was a free download and examined the concept of franchising. It outlined the history of franchises, the players involved, discussed business terminology and ended in a dramatic fashion forcing the students to ask themselves the following:
• Potential risks involved in franchising
• Legalities of franchising
• Protection available to both parties

Environmental Science 20 - Student Directed Study Rubric - Chelsey Sundby

I created this rubric for the Student - Directed Study outcome in Environmental Science 20. I wanted to leave the rubric very broad - based in order to give the students freedom to choose how they wanted to complete the project. Fostering creativity in our students is one of the 21st CCs (Competency 1: Creativity, Innovation, Entrepreneurship). By giving our students freedom to choose what they want to learn, how they want to go about learning it, and how they want to demonstrate their learning, we are embodying 21st Century Assessment practices. This assessment also gives the student a chance to think critically (competency 2), as they must complete research and then use the research to conclude how to answer their research question. The ability to acquire and process and wide variety of information to find out what is relevant is a major part of critical thinking. In this project, the students are required to work with at two of their peers at different times throughout the project to peer assess and collaborate in order to improve their projects. The idea of working with your peers to improve your product is part of 21st CCs (number 3), and is an essential skill for the students to have as they enter the work force. Throughout this assignment, the students will use a variety of forms of technology in order to complete their research and present their findings, which falls under competency #7.

Exploring Language and Identity: Amy Tan‰'s ‰"Mother Tongue‰" and Beyond
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

In the essay ‰"Mother Tongue,‰" Amy Tan explains that she ‰"began to write stories using all the Englishes I grew up with.‰" How these ‰"different Englishes‰" or even a language other than English contribute to identity is a crucial issue for adolescents.

In this lesson, students explore this issue by brainstorming the different languages they use in speaking and writing, and when and where these languages are appropriate. They write in their journals about a time when someone made an assumption about them based on their use of language, and share their writing with the class. Students then read and discuss Amy Tan's essay ‰"Mother Tongue.‰" Finally, they write a literacy narrative describing two different languages they use and when and where they use these languages.

Every one of use gets anxious or worried at some times in our life. This is normal. We are supposed to get worried, because worrying keeps us safe and out of danger. If we were never afraid of falling, we might walk along rooftops. Which would be very dangerous and really bad for our health and safety! We may worry about being in a car accident. So because of this we wear a seat belt to minimize our chances of getting hurt. We still take the risk of being in a car, but we minimize the chances of getting hurt by wearing our seatbelt.
Throughout our day we encounter varying degrees of worry or anxiety. Some of these are understandable and sometimes our worries seem to be unreasonable. Describe specific situations that make you anxious and the level of discomfort it gives you. On a scale of 0 to 10 ( 0 being not at all anxious, and 10 being extremely anxious) rate how much each situation affects you.
After ranking the situations that make you anxious, think about things that you could do to change the ranking to a lower level. Write that down on a separate piece of paper and then DO IT, don’t avoid it.
For Example: If I am feeling overwhelmed by an assignment, I could break the assignment down into smaller sections and then tackle each section one day at a time. This would lower my anxiety level (on the scale) about getting the assignment done. BUT, I would also get the assignment done and not AVOID doing it because it makes me anxious.
It is important to identify the things that make us anxious, but it is even more important to figure out a way that we can reduce our anxiety about something, and then ACTUALLY work on reducing the anxiety.
Attachment includes chart for this.
