There was physics before Einstein in the same way that there was biology before Darwin. Einstein didn’t just add some new ideas to physics. And he didn’t just add a unifying framework for doing physics, like Newton. Einstein took what people thought was physics, turned it upside down, then turned it inside out.

This activity is designed for a social studies, politics, civics or citizenship class. It can be used in secondary and elementary classrooms. Here is an overview of the simulation:

Students take part in a quick open-voting process to understand why a secret ballot is important.
Then they take on the roles of political party members or election officers. They run an election on a community or school issue they care about.
Students vote for a candidate, ballots are counted and a winner is announced.
Finally, students reflect on what they learned about their role in the simulation and what makes elections fair.
This simulation is based on the procedures used for Canadian federal elections. The tools and information in the kit are as authentic as possible while still being classroom-friendly.

Today, we'll explore the materials electrical engineers work with. We'll look at high-conductors, insulators, and how low-conductivity conductors can be used to generate light and heat.

So we ended last episode at the start of the 20th century with special purpose computing devices such as Herman Hollerith’s tabulating machines. But as the scale of human civilization continued to grow as did the demand for more sophisticated and powerful devices. Soon these cabinet-sized electro-mechanical computers would grow into room-sized behemoths that were prone to errors. But is was these computers that would help usher in a new era of computation - electronic computing.

Quality classroom assessment produces accurate information that is used effectively to maximize student learning. Accurate information comes from:
• clearly defining learning targets for students,
• clearly understanding the purpose(s) for which information about student learning is being gathered,
• using a variety of assessment methods as well, and
• designing assessments that cover important aspects of a learning target.

Investigate and manipulate elements of music and principles of composition including repetition and variety.

Choose an idea, a storyline, or an object that you want to represent. Create a presentation that shows repetition and variety in at least three different elements of music, and explain how it represents your idea/story/object. The explanation can be verbal, visual, or written. This can be worked on individually or collaboratively as a group.

Elkonin boxes, or “sound boxes”, provide a visual representation of how words are segmented into individual letter-sounds. They help students see how a word is divided into its sound parts. This will help students with the alphabetic principle, decoding, spelling, and phoneme awareness.
