"APERÇU
Construisez une fleur mécanique qui s'ouvre lorsqu'il y a de la lumière. Cette fleur utilise quelques mouvements mécaniques intéressants dont un câble push-pull pour convertir le mouvement de rotation en un mouvement linéaire pour une tige flexible. A wide variety of natural and synthetic fibers are used in our clothing, home furnishings and in our travel and sports equipment. The specific material chosen for each application depends on how closely the properties of the material match the design needs. This activity focuses on the different characteristics of fabrics and shows students how natural and synthetic fabrics differ from one another. Students weigh the advantages and disadvantages of fabrics when considering the appropriate fabric to be used.

This nanomaterials engineering lesson introduces practical applications for nanotechnology and some scientific principles related to such applications. It provides students with a first-hand understanding of how nanotechnology and nanomaterials really work. Through the interactive demos, their interest is piqued about the odd and intriguing nano-materials behaviors they witness, which engages them to next conduct the three fun associated nanoscale technologies activities. The scientific method is reviewed and reinforced with the use of controls and variables, and the engineering design process is explored. The focus of the activity is on renewable energy, as well as the design, testing and redesign of small cars made from household materials. The activity (and an extension worksheet) includes the use of kinematic equations using distance, time traveled and speed to enforce exponents and decimals.

This video provides a virtual tour of Hadrian's Villa using a 3D digital model of the villa created under the direction of Dr. Bernard Frischer. The ruins of Hadrian's Villa, in the town of Tivoli, near Rome, is spread over an area of approximately 250 acres. Many of the structures were designed by the Emperor Hadrian who ruled from 117 until his death in 138 C.E. This virual rendering is based on current archeological research and has been created in consultation with art historians, archaeologists, and museum curators with expertise in this area. Jusqu’à douze projets seront choisis dans le volet arts et compositions et seront inclus dans un livret artistique présentant leur œuvre et leur message. »

PROJETS

«Les élèves qui participent au volet projets sont invités à aller plus loin en soumettant un plan et un budget pour leur vision de la réconciliation dans leur communauté ou leur école. Les projets suivants sont envisagés : inviter des survivants, des aînés ou des gardiens du savoir à prendre la parole dans le cadre d’une série d’activités d’apprentissage; construire une installation artistique permanente représentant la réconciliation à l’école; ou encourager le bénévolat dans les communautés sur le thème de la réconciliation. Six projets du volet projets recevront 750 $, six recevront 1 000 $ et trois recevront 1 500 $. Ces projets seront également reconnus dans un livret artistique.»

«Douze projets du volet arts et compositions et du volet projets seront sélectionnés et honorés lors d’une cérémonie nationale. Students are presented with an engineering challenge: To design a sustainable guest village within the Saguaro National Park in Arizona. Through four lessons and six associated activities, they study ecological relationships with an emphasis on the Sonoran Desert. They examine species adaptations. They come to appreciate the complexity and balance that supports the exchange of energy and matter within food webs. Then students apply what they have learned about these natural relationships to the study of biomimicry and sustainable design. They study the flight patterns of birds and relate their functional design to aeronautical engineering. A computer simulation model is also incorporated into this unit and students use this program to examine perturbations within a simple ecosystem. The solution rests within the lessons and applications of this unit.
