After 90 percent of the town was damaged or destroyed by a tornado, Greensburg, Kansas, and Kiowa County Memorial Hospital developed a Long-Term Community Recovery plan to rebuild for resilience.

Students' understanding of how robotic light sensors work is reinforced in a design challenge involving LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robots and light sensors. Working in pairs, students program LEGO robots to follow a flashlight as its light beam moves around. Students practice and learn programming skills and logic design in parallel. They see how robots take input from light sensors and use it to make decisions to move, similar to the human sense of sight. Students also see how they perform the steps of the engineering design process in the course of designing and testing to achieve a successful program. A PowerPoint® presentation and pre/post quizzes are provided.

With a continued focus on the Sonoran Desert, students are introduced to the concepts of food chains and food webs through a PowerPoint® presentation. This lesson focuses on how food packages are designed and made. Students will learn three of the main functions of a food package. They will learn what is necessary of the design and materials of a package to keep food clean, protect or aid in the physical and chemical changes that can take place in a food, and identify a food appealingly. Then, in the associated activity, the students will have the opportunity to become packaging engineers by designing and building their own food package for a particular type of food.

At the end of this activity the students should be able to Identify the food groups, Identify reasons to choose healthy food choices to eat, Sort foods on to the MyHealthy Plate, and Identify how the local farmer produces and provides food for the consumers.

The Food Science, Dietetics, and Nutrition Pathway focuses on three specializations centered on the science of food in food prepartation and development and its relationship to the health and well-being of individuals. Students pursuing this career pathway learn observational and analytical skills in food safety and sanitation; the chemistry of food; chemical and biological processes; functional and nutritional components of food; sensory evaluation; guidelines for a healthy diet; the psychology of food and eating; specialized diet planning; food production and processing; and packaging and product development.

Through this activity students will learn about food security and some of the causes of food insecurity both globally and at home. We know that if we take an animal out of its habitat, it will have a difficult time surviving. We also know that there's a lot more going on in ecosystems than just temperature. In fact, there are so many elements in ecosystems, that if just one leaves or gets out of whack, it can be terrible for the whole thing.
