A web page and interactive applet illustrating the properties of a octagon (8 sided polygon). The applet shows an octagon where the user can drag any vertex to reshape it. User can see that the interior and exterior angles are constant in a regular octagon, but vary in an irregular version. Controls allow the display or hiding of the diagonals, and triangles within the octagon. The web page lists the properties of an octagon including interior angles, exterior angles, sum of exterior angles, area, number of diagonals and number of internal triangles. Links to pages with generalized properties of all polygons. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. On the Shoulders of Giants - Milutin Milankovitch
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Milutin Milankovitch formulated a comprehensive mathematical model that calculated latitudinal differences in solar radiation upon the Earth's surface and the corresponding surface temperatures for 600,000 years prior to the year 1800. Readers can learn how Milankovitch developed his theories and how they were confirmed years later by climatic data found in deep-sea sediment cores, which indicated that major variations in climate such as ice ages were closely associated with changes in the geometry of Earth's orbit. This is part of NASA's Earth Observatory series of publications entitled "On the Shoulders of Giants," which are about scientists who revolutionized our understanding of the atmosphere, oceans, climate, and environment.

As students proceed through the lessons, more story groups are available for reading aloud. In the first story groups, the language is quite controlled. In later story groups, after students have mastered a large percentage of the phonics patterns of English, the language increasingly resembles the language of ordinary texts the student will see at school or in the library.

Our Homes Are Bleeding - Digital Collection

The "Our Homes Are Bleeding" collection has grown out of the stories of cut-off lands in British Columbia. These stories are a part of the history of the reserve system in Canada, aboriginal title and rights and First Nations resistance to colonial assertion of land title.

The digital collection draws together several types of primary materials. The records of the McKenna McBride Royal Commission (1913 - 1916) include transcripts of testimonies given to the Commission, photographs and maps. Additional historical records, including maps, documents, newspaper articles, photographs, audio and video clips, show the continual assertion of aboriginal title and rights. Resource lists, narrative essays, a student webquest and teacher's resources have been developed to support the use of the collection.
