Students will research the laws around tobacco of another part of the world and write a brief narrative from the perspective living in the environment created by those regulations.
In this video from 2008, Nokomis Josephine Mandamin vividly recounts her walk around the Great Lakes. Along with her contagious passion and leadership, it is evident that Nokomis was also a gifted storyteller and a natural educator—leading relentlessly by example and with heart. Nokomis used every fibre of her being to advocate for not only her own Peoples, but for all life on Earth. Her love and spirit of life will flow through coming generations, rippling into relationships of reciprocity all across Turtle Island. We wish her spirit a peaceful journey home.
Carrying Her Message
• See how Nokomis supported and inspired one Thunder Bay teacher and his classroom of junior water walkers (and eventually, the whole school) to infuse science and technology into their water inquiry, in partnership with the Google Earth Educator Community. Read Peter Cameron's blog post, and explore #juniorwaterwalkers' awesome Google Earth project.
• See how Nokomis inspired our past Burtynsky Award winner, Jennifer Baron, to lead a water inquiry with her students in partnership with York Region District School Board's First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Curriculum Leads, Towana Brooks and Hayley Williamson. More than 200 students led a water walk around Lake Simcoe.
• Primitive Entertainment has made WATERLIFE, a documentary about water that features a small part of Nokomis's story, narrated by Gord Downie, free online for an extended period of time.
Students learn about material balances, a fundamental concept of chemical engineering. They use stoichiometry to predict the mass of carbon dioxide that escapes after reacting measured quantities of sodium bicarbonate with dilute acetic acid. Students then produce the reactions of the chemicals in a small reactor made from a plastic water bottle and balloon.
An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate the incircle of a polygon - The largest circle the will fit inside a polygon that touches every side. The applet shows a polygon where the user can drag any vertex and change the number of sides. As they do so, the incircle is drawn for that polygon and the radius calculation is updated. Calculation can be turned off for class discussions. The text on the web page gives two formulae for calculating the inradius, depending on the initial givens. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. "The Saskatchewan Ministry of Education is guided by a Student First approach in which students’ strengths, needs and interests are central to inclusive educational experiences for learning. Inclusive opportunities promote increased understanding and acceptance of diversity within the classroom, school and the community.
Inclusive education provides students with an opportunity to learn with age appropriate peers within schools in their home communities. An inclusive environment is welcoming and accepting of student interests, backgrounds and life experiences." (p. 2)

Provincial or territorial income tax rates apply in addition to federal income tax rates.
My action plan is currently focusing on including questions for deeper understanding (Blooms Taxonomy) in both Science and ELA 8. I wanted to also focus on using the 6 Thinking Hats of Debono alongside Blooms Taxonomy question in ELA to guide but not direct discussion on specific topics (Black Negative, Yellow Positive, Blue control, etc.) as well as integrating basic technology into PE games (Heart rate monitors, mileage/stepper counters during activity to measure distance covered, etc.) with a focus on eventually using more in depth tech in PE (QR codes, etc.)
Facing sea level rise, increasing numbers of wildfires, and encroachment of invasive species, managers of a national forest chose to integrate climate change into their new plan.

A federal study assessed vulnerabilities of transportation infrastructure to extreme events in Mobile, Alabama. The effort also resulted in tools and approaches that other transportation departments can use to assess and address their own vulnerabilities.
Students are asked to consider the expression that arises in physics as the combined resistance of two resistors in parallel. However, the context is not explicitly considered here. The task is good general preparation for problems more specifically aligned to either A-SSE.1 or A-SSE.2.
The purpose of this task is to help students see manipulation of expressions as an activity undertaken for a purpose.
This site is easy to use, has tons of ideas, and breaks art ideas up by grade, art period, medium, artist, subject, and (what I love the most) integration. If you click on the Integration tab, there are numerous ideas on how to bring art into all your other subject areas. The ideas are endless!

As NASA's Earth Observatory Web site describes: "Each year, the North Atlantic Ocean announces springtime by producing 'blooms' large enough to be seen from space." While scientists have had satellite images of these phytoplankton blooms for years, researchers can now detect biofluorescence from these microscopic organisms, with important implications for monitoring the environment. The Web site presents some of these incredible images, along with an interesting essay on the topic (which includes a handy hypertext glossary).
In this activity, learners explore the size and scale of the universe by shrinking cosmic scale in 4 steps, zooming out from the realm of the Earth and Moon to the realm of the galaxies. This informational brochure was designed as a follow-up take-home activity for teen and adult audiences. It can follow informal education activities where participants have experienced related space science programming. This activity allows participants to explore ideas of size and scale in the universe at their own pace.

"Incredibox (also stylized as INCREDiBOX) is a beatboxing-based music video game, which is created, developed, and published by the French company, So Far So Good (SFSG). The concept of the game is users dragging and dropping sound icons on different characters to make music."
