Technology Through Time: Ancient Astronomical Alignments
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

This is an online set of information about astronomical alignments of ancient structures and buildings. Learners will read background information about the alignments to the Sun in such structures as the Great Pyramid, Chichen Itza, and others. Next, the site contains 10 short problem sets that involve a variety of math skills, including determining the scale of a photo, measuring and drawing angles, plotting data on a graph, and creating an equation to match a set of data. Each set of problems is contained on one page and all of the sets utilize real-world problems relating to astronomical alignments of ancient structures. Each problem set is flexible and can be used on its own, together with other sets, or together with related lessons and materials selected by the educator. This was originally included as a folder insert for the 2010 Sun-Earth Day.

Thrively - Strengths Assessment & Project-Based Learning for Students
Rating
0.0 stars

Thrively is a website that helps kids find online and local activities that fit their particular interests. Thrively was created with input from pediatric neuropsychologists, and the site bursts with teacher-contributed lesson plans and ideas. Once a teacher sets up a class, kids take an assessment that identifies 23 potential strengths. The site then suggests activities tailored to kids' interests and strengths; Thrively says it has more than 100,000 on file and has recently created new content related to projects, videos, journaling, and career pathway maps. Kids can click on a "Done It" button when they've completed an activity, and progress can be viewed using site dashboards. Users can also share activity boards with other members of their social circle.

Through Mala's Eyes
Rating
0.0 stars

Through Mala's Eyes takes a look at the Inuit community and helps students understand and appreciate one of the diverse cultures that exist within Canada. This resource looks at the life of an Inuit community in northern Quebec, through the eyes of Mala, a twelve year old Inuk boy. Through his first person narratives, Mala provides interesting background information about life in his community.

Downloadable teaching resource provided.

This is an excellent resource for teaching students about Inuit life. This resource speaks directly to students as it is given from the point of view of a twelve year old child. Students ages nine to fourteen should enjoy relating to these stories. It is rare to find a resource about Inuit life that is this modern, positive and engaging.
There are a variety of activities included within the resource, and teachers are encouraged to choose those which best apply to their classroom. There is also a lot of good background information provided in the resource, such as a glossary of Inuit terms and the Inuit alphabet. As well, online links are provided for more information.

Top 5 Hits of Math 6/7/8: Summative Project
Conditional Remix & Share Permitted
CC BY-NC-SA
Rating
0.0 stars

Students in Mathematics 6/7/8 work in mixed-grade groups to determine a “Top 5” list of concepts from the course based on provided criteria developed over the course of the year. Students choose a format in which to share their “Top 5” including rationale for why each concept connects to mathematics outside of the classroom. Ultimately, students present their conclusions in an attempt to convince the panel that their “Top 5” is the most deserving of entering the Mathematics Hall of Fame. I decided to use mixed-grade groups for this project in an attempt to encourage more rich conversation as students need to explain concepts in order to convince their peers of their importance. The timing of this project at the end of the year also allows the work to serve as review for final written evaluations.
