This is a core French unit developed for grades 4 and 5 that studies the Festival du Voyageur and discusses other French festivals across Canada. Students have an opportunity to learn about the voyageurs and their travels. Students will discover the leisure activities, food and clothing of the voyageurs. They will visit the website of the Festival du Voyageur that is held each year in Saint-Boniface, Manitoba. For the experiential goal, students will create and organize a “voyageur” afternoon including a brochure or poster and an oral presentation. Learning activities include doing a vehicle inspection, studying road signs and their meanings, studying the driving rules of the road, role playing a traffic violation situation, and making the decision to have a designated driver. The experiential goal requires students to create, in small groups, a written exam to obtain a driver’s license, and to pass this exam demonstrating that they are aware and responsible drivers.
