Learning what affects/impacts our overall wellness

In this mini unit, students will develop the knowledge and understanding of factors that can affect their overall wellness. They will work in groups to become experts on a topic related to the outcomes (i.e. nutrition, physical activity, relationships, mental health, environment) and present their findings to the rest of class. They will need to make the connections between their topic and the elements of the wellness wheel, and come up with strategies to improve overall wellness/balance the wheel.

Everyone wants things in their life. The problem is we often just think about what we want and then feel sad that we don’t have what we want. Sometimes we can obtain what we want by changing what we are doing, how we are acting or what we are thinking! Other times what we want depends on someone else changing or doing something. This is where we run into problems! When our wants depend on someone else, we are often doomed in ever being able to get that want fulfilled. If this is the case, then we must change what we want. Or realize we need to make a change without them changing.
In the table below ask yourself the following questions, and then fill in the boxes and do what you need to do to get your want.

Youth Action for Prevention – Saskatchewan Prevention Institute
Rating
0.0 stars

YAP is a youth-focused FASD prevention initiative that encourages young people to create resources and projects that raise awareness of FASD and other alcohol-related harms among their peers. Saskatchewan youth (between the ages of 14-24) develop projects and/or resources to share with their community.

The YAP program integrates and applies a number of strategies to youth-focused FASD prevention. First, using a philosophy of youth engagement as the basis of the program, youth are supported to create positive change in their lives and in their communities. Second, the YAP program is characterized by a harm reduction approach, focusing on the consequences and risks of substance use rather than on use of the substance itself. For example, rather than suggesting total abstinence from alcohol, the harm reduction approach recognizes that not all youth will simply stop drinking. The harm reduction approach focuses instead on providing skills and tools to reduce the harms experienced through alcohol use. Third, the YAP program facilitates peer-to-peer prevention, by providing skills, resources, and support to participants in creating resources and projects specifically tailored to the needs of their peers.

Life can be stressful. Over two thirds of people report that their day-to-day stress is unmanageable. But the good news? Stress itself isn't always a negative thing! We can actually use stress to motivate us when tackling our daily challenges. But because it's hard to think clearly about managing stress when life gets tough, thinkFull exists. By providing tools and techniques, thinkFull helps you understand your stress and work towards a healthier life through personalized tips and suggestions. thinkFull will help you take control of how you deal with the stress in your life.

How we became thinkFull
TELUS, a Canadian Telecom provider, is committed to giving back to the community. A year ago it launched its first ever Social Enterprise competition to encourage entrepreneurial and community spirit amongst its team members. We were chosen to be part in this initiative and our passion is to drive change in the area of mental wellbeing.

Each of us at thinkFull has a personal story to share about difficult circumstances, life transitions, and the stress that accompanies it. As our reliance on smartphones grows, we believe that we can harness their utility to help others manage stress more effectively. In collaboration with a number of volunteers and supporters like Dr. Stan Kutcher, CMHA BC, Here to Help BC, mindyourmind, MJB Technologies and Kelty Resource Centre, we have been able to make this app available to you.
