Role and Situation
Students are a team of television producers. They have been asked to create a reality show that has the participants engage in challenges, tasks, choices and survival type situations. The reality show will consist of 3 - 5 episodes. The team will end the project with a brief presentation to a room of entertainment executives to "pitch" their show and a 20 –60 second commercial or promotional video of their show.
This PBL was created to extend student learning from the unit “Finding the Courage”. Specifically, my students studied the novel Hatchet by Gary Paulsen, and I wanted to create a meaningful connection for them that attaches to real-world situations. Students are competing against their other classmates to create the best possible Reality TV show, as well as they are utilizing critical thinking, creativity, communication, collaboration, and computer and digital technologies.
Ayiti: The Cost of Life is a role-playing video game in which the player assumes the roles of family members living in rural Haiti. At the start of the game, the player chooses a primary goal for his/her family: achieve education, make money, stay healthy, or maintain happiness. During the course of the game, the player encounters unexpected events and must make decisions that contribute to or detract from achieving the chosen goal.
This activity prepares students to watch the film, "Local Voices, Global Visions," by having them examine the presence of technology in their own lives. Students should be familiar with the use of spreadsheets and have a basic working definition of information and communication technology (ICT), using the Understanding page or from their own initial research on the subject. This activity is part of a series of lessons surrounding the film, "Local Voices, Global Visions."
