In which John Green teaches you about population. So, how many people can reasonably live on the Earth? Thomas Malthus got it totally wrong in the 19th century, but for some reason, he keeps coming up when we talk about population. In 1800, the human population of the Earth passed 1 billion, and Thomas Malthus posited that growth had hit its ceiling, and the population would level off and stop growing. He was totally right. Just kidding, he was totally wrong! There are like 7 billion people on the planet now! John will teach a little about how Malthus made his calculations, and explain how Malthus came up with the wrong answer. As is often the case, it has to do with making projections based on faulty assumptions. Man, people do that a lot.

Working in groups, students look at three different villages in various parts of Africa and design economically viable engineering solutions to answer the energy needs of the off-the-grid small towns, given limited budgets. Each village has different nearby resources, both renewable and nonrenewable. Student teams conduct research, make calculations, consider the options and create plans, which they present to the class. Through their investigations and planning of custom solutions for each locale, they experience the real-world engineering research and analysis steps of the engineering design process.

This course is designed for learners in the middle grades, to reinforce responsible citizenship of our world by encouraging them to think sustainably. This sustainability mindset established in our existing Sustainability Foundations course will be further built upon in this course. The learner will complete an introduction to recycling, explore the tradeoffs of mining, refining, and recycling, and then engage in a simulation that requires them to make real-world decisions about using their role as a consumer to promote change.
This course helps students develop strategies for becoming better informed consumers when it comes to recycling. Students will learn about single-stream recycling, the environmental impacts of mining and refining raw materials to be used in consumer goods, and how to make sustainable choices.
Possible additional curriculum connections include Social Studies 6 IN6.3 and DR6.2, depending on extensions made in the classroom.
