From Your Birthday to Jupiter's
Read the Fine Print
Rating
0.0 stars

Learners will explore Jupiter's origins through three stories. First, they model their own lifetimes by tying knots in lengths of yarn to represent key events in their pasts. Then, children listen to and act out a cultural origins story, such as the Skytellers stories told by Native American master storytellers. Finally, they explore Jupiter's story by modeling a timeline from today back to its "birthday." They use the timeline to visually demonstrate that the Big Bang occurred much earlier in the past. Children will discover how the Juno mission to Jupiter will help unveil how our solar system - including Earth - came to be. The activities are from Explore! Jupiter's Family Secrets, a series designed to engage children in space and planetary science in libraries and informal learning environments.

The problem requires students to not only convert miles to kilometers and gallons to liters but they also have to deal with the added complication of finding the reciprocal at some point. In the USA we use distance per unit volume to measure fuel efficiency but in Europe we use volume per unit distance. Furthermore, the unit of distance is not simply 1 km but rather 100 km.

An interactive applet and associated web page that demonstrate full angles (those equal to 360 deg). The applet presents an angle (initially full) that the user can adjust by dragging the end points of the line segments forming the angle. As it changes it shows the angle measure and a message that indicate which type of angle it is. There a software 'detents' that make it easy capture exact angles such as 90 degrees and 180 degrees The message and angle measures can be turned off to facilitate classroom discussion. The text on the page has links to other pages defining each angle type in depth. Applet can be enlarged to full screen size for use with a classroom projector. This resource is a component of the Math Open Reference Interactive Geometry textbook project at http://www.mathopenref.com.

Here are some fun activities that can be done in the Financial Literacy classroom as Ice Breakers to start the year: Tell Me What This Means - group project that students can work through together to figure out financial messages; Sure Fire Ice Breakers- a big variety; Would You Rather- fun way to start the year and get to know your students; Fin Lit Bingo- allows students to get to know each other; Truth About Millionaires- this could be a fun way to get the students discussing wealth, myths and open up the class with each other; Draw the Logos- students could have fun drawing these logos from memory. You could have a discussion about business, marketing and the influence of these companies on our shopping mindset (and how easily we recall their logo, which means we are more likely to buy their products)

Students are introduced to the multidisciplinary field of material science. Through a class demo and PowerPoint® presentation, they learn the basic classes of materials (metals, ceramics, polymers, composites) and how they differ from one another, considering concepts such as stress, strain, ductile, brittle, deformation and fracture. Practical examples help students understand how the materials are applied, and further information about specific research illustrates how materials and material science are useful in space exploration. A worksheet and quiz are provided.
