Our approach to civic education is about providing opportunities for students to experience their democracy first-hand rather than by reading about it in a textbook. By reaching students throughout their school career, during and between election periods, we hope to prepare them to be responsible and informed citizens.

CIVIX programming focuses on the themes of elections, government budgets, elected representatives and digital media literacy. Programs available include:

(1) Student Vote - an election enables teachers to bring democracy alive in the classroom

(2) Student Budget Consultation - combines civic education and financial literacy

(3) Rep Day - connects students with their elected representatives for a virtual or in-person meeting

(4) CTRL-F - a module providing quick strategies students can use to investigate and evaluate information

(5) PoliTalks - supports educators in bringing political discussions to the classroom - Materials are free with
registration, and programming is designed for grades 5-12

(6) Democracy Bootcamp - professional development conference for teachers designed to improve their
democratic engagement and delivery of CIVIX programming

This new website from Agriculture in the Classroom is a kid-friendly, engaging website that will bring the story of agriculture to life through highly interactive information, colourful illustrations, real-life photos, informative text, quizzes, teacher lessons and more! Students will discover the Past, Present, Evolution and Future of agriculture in Saskatchewan.

We currently offer 3 school programs:
1. Little Legislators Scavenger Hunt: 40-60 minutes, Pre-K to Grade 3 - Students will participate in a scavenger hunt for Saskatchewan symbols, and important people and objects in the Legislative Building. They learn about what government does in the building, monarchy connections, treaty maps and Indigenous leaders in Saskatchewan, and more.
2. Let's Get Legislative: 2 hours, Grades 4 to 12 - Students will gain an in-depth understanding of the function of the Legislative Building and of the elected members of the Assembly, and have the opportunity to ask their school’s MLA questions about what they see and learn in the Chamber. The Let's Get Legislative tour is only available when the Assembly is in session. For this program, please refer to the parliamentary calendar to select a date when the Assembly will be sitting.
3. Standard School Tour: 30 minutes, all grades - Our 30-minute tour, tailored to your students’ grade level. Learn the history of the building, government, the Westminster parliamentary tradition, and more.

This novel study was completed by embedding the principles of structured literacy with reading and writing activities for both sides of Scarborough's Reading Rope.  The ELA is a guide to personalize based upon the needs of your students. Aligning to a Saskatchewan theme, the students will also make connections to Indigenous Perspectives and the mistasiniy found in the prairies.  The driving question, "How are we all connected to the land", introduces a variety of resources connected to the story focused on all areas of education. 

PowerPlay Young Entrepreneurs is a highly engaging program that is designed for classrooms ranging from grades 4 to 8. Students have fun exploring their passions, talents and interests as they plan and carry out their own business ventures. The Museum of Natural Sciences at the U of S in Saskatoon showcases the history of Earth and the evolution of life on it through exhibits and displays that include dinosaur skeleton replicas, fossils, live animals and plants, rocks, and minerals.

Free field trips are offered over seven weeks in partnership with the USask science departments, museums and galleries, Science Outreach, and community groups. Join us for hands-on activities and tours at the Museum of Natural Sciences, in teaching laboratories, and at other campus cultural facilities.

Vault: Understanding Money is a digital education program that teaches students how to make wise financial decisions and improve their social emotional skills like goal-setting and responsible decision making. The interactive lessons will engage learners in an immersive adventure that translates financial concepts into easy to apply experiences that help students develop strategies for managing future finances.
