The Cree Dictionary of Mathematical Terms with Visual Examples provides Cree equivalents of 176 mathematics terms and their definitions in English. The visual examples mainly contain Indigenous elements. The Dictionary was reviewed by Elders, Indigenous Knowledge Keepers and Cree-speaking educators.

Cree Code Talker reveals the role of Canadian Cree code talker Charles ‘Checker’ Tomkins during the Second World War. Digging deep into the US archives it depicts the true story of Charles’ involvement with the US Air Force and the development of the code talkers communication system, which was used to transmit crucial military communications, using the Cree language as a vital secret weapon in combat.

In this lesson, students will expand their knowledge and dive deeper into lesser-known Indigenous histories in Canada, particularly those of Second World War Cree Code Talkers. Students will then be asked to summarize and compare both histories.

What are Cree Code Talkers? What was their purpose?
During the Second World War, encryption and coded messages were deemed essential to winning the war. Utilizing Cree, the government relied on Indigenous men to use their language to aid the war effort; these men were known as Cree Code Talkers.

This YouTube channel is full of many supports for teaching Cree. It allows the learner to hear the language in context. The channel provides pronunciations and structures to help you move forward and learn on your own!

Provided by the Government of Saskatchewan to the University of Regina, this is a Cree Language Learning resource that one can download and use for free.

As Cree people, we were given the gift of being named for the four parts of human beings. Nehiyawak, we were called.

It means being balanced in the four parts that are found in the four directions of the Medicine Wheel. These four parts for human beings are the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental aspects of the self. We need to try and balance these four parts that were given to us, to function as people.

The fire is in the centre of the Medicine Wheel. That is where the meaning of the teachings comes from. For me this fire is also the self. When you look at the Medicine Wheel, you start from self. And as you look out, you make your circle.

This is how the Medicine Wheel represents the life journey of people.

The Piikani Nation is part of the Blackfoot Confederacy. The Siksika, the Bloods, and the Piikani all speak the Blackfoot language, and we’re all part of Treaty 7 in southern Alberta - along with the Tsuu T’ina, or Sarcee, who speak a different language.

When they put in the border for the United States, they put it right through our Piikani territory. Half of us were sent to the states and the other half went north. So we became the northern Piikani. The Southern Piikani are across the border in Montana.

During World War II, Charles “Checker” Tomkins fought the enemy with a different kind of weapon. As a code talker in the Canadian military, he used his knowledge of the native Cree language to help develop a top-secret communication system to defeat the Germans.

Each financial topic and activity features artwork by Simon Brascoupé paired with a teaching from the animal world that draws on their skills, strengths and experiences in managing resources. These worksheets are designed to facilitate one-on-one conversations or to be used in financial education workshops (and in fillable pdf format)  They can be used in the order they appear, or in a different order that fits best with the individual. This resource also includes recorded webinar, with faciliator guide, blank slides to make your own presenation, and full booklets in English, French, Cree and Ojibwe.

This lesson teaches Cree words through songs. These songs often serve a specific purpose and have great meaning. With the guidance of an Elder, Knowledge Keeper, or singer/songwriter, students will listen to songs and understand the meaning behind the lyrics. Students will consider how cultural identity is reflected in the work.
