Antimatter, the charge reversed equivalent of matter, has captured the imaginations of science fiction fans for years as a perfectly efficient form of energy. While normal matter consists of atoms with negatively charged electrons orbiting positively charged nuclei, antimatter consists of positively charged positrons orbiting negatively charged anti-nuclei. When antimatter and matter meet, both substances are annihilated, creating massive amounts of energy. Instances in which antimatter is portrayed in science fiction stories (such as Star Trek) are examined, including their purposes (fuel source, weapons, alternate universes) and properties. Students compare and contrast matter and antimatter, learn how antimatter can be used as a form of energy, and consider potential engineering applications for antimatter.

Working in teams of three, students perform quantitative observational experiments on the motion of LEGO MINDSTORMS(TM) NXT robotic vehicles powered by the stored potential energy of rubber bands. They experiment with different vehicle modifications (such as wheel type, payload, rubber band type and lubrication) and monitor the effects on vehicle performance. The main point of the activity, however, is for students to understand that through the manipulation of mechanics, a rubber band can be used in a rather non-traditional configuration to power a vehicle. In addition, this activity reinforces the idea that elastic energy can be stored as potential energy.

Upon completion of the Solids and Liquids unit in Grade 2 Science, students have been exposed to a wide variety of the properties of solids and liquids. In order to address higher levels of thinking, such as evaluation, synthesizing and creating, I used this performance task to allow my students to summarize, show and use what they had learned throughout the unit. This challenge allowed students to creatively build a boat, using common household materials. They then tested its capacity to float and carry a load, assessed its effectiveness and lastly revised and improved it.

Students are then asked to form molecules out of atoms, much in the same way they constructed atoms out of the particles that atoms are made of.
