Challenging hate online (Grades 10-12)
In this lesson, students learn how digital media is used to promote or combat hatred and intolerance. After discussing the different ways that hate organizations get their messages out and how digital media have the potential to work against hatred, students visit and analyze anti-hate initiative websites.

With Canadians of all ages spending more time online, it’s important for children to know that some information is better kept private. Privacy Pirates, an interactive game, introduces children to the concept of online privacy and comes with an overview of related issues and suggested extension activities for educators.

In this lesson, students consider the different factors that make online sources reliable or unreliable. They then learn quick steps they can take to gauge an online source’s reliability and practice these steps by playing an interactive online game.

In this lesson, students consider the ways in which our own biases can prevent us from being objective. They then learn ways to recognize and account for our biases and practice these by playing an interactive online game. Finally, students learn about how public service campaigns can change social norms and create their own PSA to promote ethical sharing of online information.

MediaSmarts and TELUS Wise have created a series of four short videos and accompanying resources called There’s No Excuse to help start the conversation around sexting and healthy relationships, and help youth understand that forwarding a sext can do a lot of harm.
