I created a grade 4 science unit on sound. For the student’s final assessment, they got to make music by creating their own instruments. There were several components to this assessment.
The students completed a plan which included what materials they needed, how their instrument was going to make sound and change pitch and volume.
Then they had to construct their instrument.
In a sharing circle, the students shared their information and how and why they made their instrument the way it was.
Have a class jam session!
This assessment allowed students to be creative (not one of the instruments were similar)! The students had to use their critical thinking and collaboration skills to construct instruments that made sound and could change pitch and volume. There was trial and error and students going to one another for help. This assessment allowed for triangulation through conferring, observing, and the final product. The various steps also allowed for differentiation as some students were strong with writing their responses and others preferred sharing their knowledge through speech and hands on! The class jam session allowed for a celebration of learning!

LIVE (Live Interactive Video Education) Arts Education is a dynamic distance education arts program for students in Grades 1 to 9. The program supports the Saskatchewan Arts Education curriculum and is delivered via the Saskatchewan Ministry of Education LIVE Network (CommunityNet).

Teachers sign up for grade specific programs then professional Artists connect simultaneously with teachers and students in multiple schools across the province of Saskatchewan for a LIVE experience with Arts Education.

This program started out in 2005 as an Artist in the School distance education pilot program hosted by Regina Catholic Schools. Initially the broadcast programming was delivered by Mixed Media Artist in Residence Heather Cline from a special distance education broadcast classroom at St. Peter School in Regina. The program has continued to expand and evolve responding to the needs of Saskatchewan Teachers and the new Saskatchewan Arts Curriculum.

Last year the LIVE Arts program, in partnership with several Saskatchewan School Divisions, broadcast 36 programs featuring Professional Artists in the areas of Visual Arts, Drama, Music and Dance. Each program featured a Guest Artist working with a classroom teacher and their students. Teachers and students participating via distance technology followed along with the help of a guide that outlined the broadcast portion of the program and provided teachers with a follow-up hands-on activity.

Maker Stations provide targeted design thinking challenges for elementary students, emphasizing skills in engineering, art, math, science, technology, and music. 15
Maker Station options are provided for 3 weeks of daily home activities. Each Maker Station includes simplified supply lists, instructions, scannable QR code resources, and student planning/reflection templates. App extensions are provided for students to share and present creations virtually.
