NACTATR is solely focused on preventing violence and trauma in North America using training, tools and technology."

Students are introduced to prosthetics history, purpose and benefits, main components, main types, materials, control methods, modern examples including modern materials used to make replacement body parts and the engineering design considerations to develop prostheses. They learn how engineers and medical doctors work together to improve the lives of people with amputations and the challenges faced when designing new prostheses with functional and cosmetic criteria and constraints. A PowerPoint(TM) presentation and two worksheets are provided.

When tragic events happen, it can be difficult for educators, administrators, and parents to know how to help children understand and cope. How adults manage their own reactions, as well as how they help students deal with their questions and feelings, are important factors in providing children with the support and guidance they will need. Below are some useful, informative, and thoughtful resources for adults to help children through traumatic situations. Some of these resources are relevant to parents as well as educators.

This mobile training program provides specialized critical care skill training to STARS crews and other emergency care providers. The first mobile program of its kind in North America, it features a human patient simulator which replicates complex medical and traumatic problems over and over again. It offers medical personnel the opportunity to test and practice their reactions and skills, leading to a high degree of familiarity and confidence.

The mannequin: speaks and breathes, blinks and has reactive pupils, has a heartbeat and a pulse
accurately mirrors human responses to such procedures as CPR, intravenous medication, intubation, ventilation and catheterization.

The mannequins have been installed in four motorhomes, creating large mobile emergency rooms. Additionally, STARS has a wireless mannequin that can be transported in a specially-modified SUV. This mannequin can be used in a variety of environments including hospital emergency rooms, classrooms, and mock accidents scenes.

This guide is a resource for educators at all levels to introduce the value of Indigenous women’s and girls’ lives into the classroom and into the minds and hearts of young people. It will prepare educators to use a decolonizing pedagogy and a trauma-informed approach in their teaching.

It is critically important to acknowledge, however, that interpersonal violence is not the only source of trauma. Trauma can be experienced as a result of structural violence, or experiences that happen to children because of who they are, how they live, and lack of opportunities.

Students experience the engineering design process as they design and construct lower-leg prostheses in response to a hypothetical zombie apocalypse scenario. Like the well-known Apollo 13 story during which engineers were challenged to fix the crippled spacecraft with limited supplies in order to save astronauts' lives, in this activity, students act as engineers during an imaginary disaster in which a group member's leg was amputated in order to survive a zombie attack. Building on what they learned and researched in the associated lesson, they design and fabricate a replacement prosthetic limb using given specific starting material and limited additional supplies, similar to how engineers design for individuals while working within constraints. A more-advanced scenario challenges students to design a prosthesis that is able to provide a more-specific movement function.
