"The purpose of this support material is to assist educators in using collaborative inquiry to engage in conversations and develop actions to deepen their own, their students’ and communities’ understanding of residential school experiences and related issues that affect the process of reconciliation in Saskatchewan.
These materials may be used in a variety of contexts such as staff meetings, professional learning groups, workshops, school councils and community gatherings. The sample conversation questions and actions may also be useful for individual teacher reflection and planning."

Engaging lesson plans based on the Five Foundational Knowledge Themes. Educators have the opportunity to build their foundational knowledge while delivering Métis content through lessons that reflect promising practices.

For National Indigenous Peoples Day (June 21), the National Film Board of Canada (NFB) is marking the second anniversary of the launch of its Indigenous Action Plan with a slate of 40 Indigenous-led works in development, production or recent release—while delivering on a commitment to devote a minimum of 15% of its production spending on Indigenous works, one year ahead of schedule.

June 21 is National Indigenous Peoples Day.   The following are links to resources to support students, parents and teachers as we celebrate National Indigenous Peoples Day.

The Sixties Scoop refers to a period in Saskatchewan’s history when Indigenous children were removed from their parents and communities by provincial child welfare services. Status, non-status, Métis and Inuit children were placed for adoption and/or foster care and were raised outside of their communities without the influences of their Indigenous culture, values and languages. This section contains a list of resources and curriculum connections for teachers to address with their students.

This document shares and outlines effective FNME partnerships that could inspire work within your own school or division.

This document is meant to serve as a guide as your school begins to write its own land acknowledgement. Writing a land acknowledgement as a collaborative process can be a rewarding and meaningful experience for staff, students, parents and all involved. It is a time to reflect on the history of the land we are on and our relationship to the land. Our current relationship to the land is inextricably intertwined with our relationship with Indigenous Peoples.

"This learning module is designed to help teachers and other educational professionals become comfortable with the topic of reconciliation so that they can begin incorporating this important topic into their work with their students.

This learning module was developed by Joanna Sanders while working to complete a Certificate in Reconciliation Studies that is offered by the First Nations University of Canada."

 On August 30, 2022, a Flag Ceremony was held at the Sun West Learning Centre in Rosetown to welcome the Treaty 6, Treaty 4 and Métis Nation flags to Sun West School Division. Welcoming the flags to the Sun West Learning Centre, which is directly adjacent to the Sun West Division Office, recognizes that Sun West is on Treaty territory as well as the School Division’s commitment to the Calls to Action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, in particular those that relate to education.  The Flag Ceremony was held in conjunction with the first Sun West Administrators Meeting (Principals and Vice-Principals) of the 2022-23 school year and so the Administrators of all of Sun West’s schools participated. Most Sun West schools are within Treaty 6 Territory except for Davidson and Loreburn Central Schools that are in Treaty 4 Territory. The entire school division falls within the Métis Nation Homeland.   

This amazing resource looks at FNME from grades 1 to 9 with an inquiry approach. The key questions are examined for the grades including treaty relationships, spirit and intent, historical context, and treaty promises and provisions.

Following that a specific resource for each grade is included!

The Kindergarten to Grade 9 Treaty Education Learning Resource is designed for teachers to assist them in integrating the Treaty content and perspective with Saskatchewan’s curricula and is based on the inquiry method of teaching. It provides information about Treaties, First Nations people and the history of what is now known as Saskatchewan, as well as sample learning experiences, assessment ideas and suggested resource materials to support teachers in the development of their lessons.

First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Curriculum - Alberta Education

The digital resource Walking Together: First Nations, Métis and Inuit Perspectives in Curriculum was designed to help teachers understand the holistic nature of First Nations, Métis and Inuit ways of knowing; to provide opportunity for Inuit, First Nations and Métis peoples to share their perspectives on topics important to them; and to demonstrate First Nations, Métis and Inuit perspectives in teaching and learning experiences.

The First Nations University, Indigenous Continuing Education Centre (ICEC), is proud to offer an exclusive tutorial introducing the National Centre for Collaboration in Indigenous Education (NCCIE) website and its on-line Teaching Resource Centre for Indigenous and non-Indigenous educators. The Teaching Resource Centre is an invaluable tool for all educators. The lesson plans are searchable by subject and grade. Each lesson plan comes complete with learning outcomes, a teacher’s guide,
activities, assessment guidelines, and materials. Lesson plans and videos were co-developed with community partners across Canada in the spirit of reciprocity – to contribute to the growing educational resources that highlight Indigenous perspectives.

The tutorial is designed to highlight the educational videos, stories, and lessons available on the NCCIE website and support learners and educators in their journey of knowing and understanding Indigenous education.

The tutorial will:
• Describe where to locate useful educational resources (e.g., videos, stories, and lessons) on the NCCIE website.
• Identify resources that may be useful in your educational journey or in your teaching practice.
• Examine and implement a variety of website resources into your courses and contexts.
• Assess the support you may need to deliver website content.
• Design a plan for implementing resources from the NCCIE website.
