Numeracy is foundational to students’ academic and future success. The resources included in this collection support students develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, as well as to apply their knowledge to real-world situations. Areas of study include Number Sense, Measurement, Patterning & Algebra, Geometry and Data Management & Probability.
It is essential that students are provided explicit instruction, as well as the opportunity to practice concepts and skills both in context in out of context. In order for students to master a concept, they must be able to answer that question in a mixed review, not simply in the context of many of the same question. For example, a student may be able to calculate the fraction of a percent when given 20 of the same question, but later when given one of these questions in a mixed problem set, they are unable to answer the question – this means the concept is not yet mastered.
When structuring your math class, you may wish to include “The Big 5”:
A Mixed Cumulative Review (comprised of questions taught previously, foundational concepts, and skills needed for the day’s lesson)
Targeted Practice based on student need (full class, small groups, individual), which could include outcome-based math
Reflection & Assessment including exit slips (questions or reflective), Friday 5s, frequent regular assessment to ensure students stay on track.

Each summer, students lose critical math and literacy skills, which can widen the achievement gap among students. To prevent this “summer slide,” EVERFI has partnered with Major League Baseball to develop a continuous and engaging learning experience that prepares students of all backgrounds to enter the next school year on track. The 18-week program, targeted to 4th and 5th graders, unlocks activities at regular intervals and offers rewards for progress and consistency along the way. Students engage with content that reinforces critical math and language skills while enjoying the freedom and motivation of a baseball-themed, game-based learning experience.
This can be used throughout the year as extra reinforcement for students.

Math puzzles to get students talking about their mathematical thinking. The site provides a collection of shape, number and graph sets. Each activity has four images/numbers, students then need to pick which one doesn't belong. But the trick is this, the puzzles do not have one correct answer. This can lead to interesting conversation and descriptions of what the student notices about the arrangement.
If you think up your own, you can submit them to the site.
