The scope of the site is such that subjects such as arts and music, English language arts, and biology are options along with -ology topics that one would expect to find in a site from National Geographic. Newsela provides high-interest, printable news articles from a wide range of subject areas. Teachers can adjust the reading level of news articles to meet the needs of students. Within each article, power words are identified. Students can click on these and see the definition in student-friendly language. Newsela also provides writing prompts and questions about the articles. You can sign up for free access to the end of the 2019-20 school year. Although the site is American, there are lots of applicable news stories that align with Saskatchewan curricula and context.

North American Association for Outdoor Education offers a rich bank of resources to get students to interact with nature through art and science exploration. There are many cross-curricular activities that can be done in students’ backyards. Some resources include printable material, while others have links to videos and detailed activity guides. While this resource is North American, rather than specific to Canada or Saskatchewan, many of the activities align with Saskatchewan Curriculum.

The Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guides for Grades 5-9 (2016) and Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guide Secondary (2019) were developed by the First Nations Education Steering Committee and First Nations Schools Association.

These guides support educators integrating the rich body of First Peoples knowledge and perspectives into Science courses and other curricular areas.

Seek by iNaturalist is an iOS/Android app that helps its users identify plants, animals, and fungi in their local area. Kids can see what species have been previously observed nearby, and can also photograph specimens themselves, either directly in the app or by pulling in photos from their device's photo roll. The app will then use its image recognition technology, based on the iNaturalist library of images, to match the observed plant, animal, or fungi to a database. If there's a match, a kid's find is placed in his or her collection, but it must be an exact match; when the app can't narrow it down to an exact species, it isn't added. As kids collect more and more species, they earn badges inside the app.

Once kids have made a match, or if they're perusing the lists of species that have been previously observed near them, the app shows facts about the species, including how many have been observed, the best time of year to spot the species, a map of where it has been seen, the scientific name, other photos of it, and a general description. Also, kids' own photographed sightings end up in the collection of local images, but it all remains anonymous. There's no registration required (or even available), and no user data is collected.

The Lab is a free, interactive platform for discovering millions of authentic digital resources, creating content with online tools, and sharing in the Smithsonian's expansive community of knowledge and learning.
