The information and insights contained in this document will be of interest to anyone involved in bringing local knowledge to bear in school curriculum. Drawing upon the efforts of many people over a period of several years, Sidney Stephens has managed to distill and synthesize the critical ingredients for making the teaching of science relevant and meaningful in culturally adaptable ways. This handbook will provide teachers invaluable assistance with the task of developing and teaching "culturally responsive science curriculum."
There is mounting evidence that curricular and teaching practices that link schooling to the surrounding cultural and physical environment produce positive results on all indicators of student and school performance. This handbook reflects the most current pedagogical principles that move educational practice from teaching about culture as another discrete subject to teaching through the local culture as a way to bring depth, breadth and significance to all aspects of the curriculum.

In the 21CC project the students will put together a trunk full of artifacts or ‘keepsakes’ from the perspective anyone who would have lived through the 1920s and 30s. The truck has to demonstrate the change the occurred over that 20 year span. The artifacts must be tangible (not only a picture of an artifact but a picture could be an artifact); could be original or replica (made by them). It follows the 6 phases of creativity with a student project guide and an artifact presentation rubric.
Students who regularly complete and turn in homework assignments perform significantly better …
Students who regularly complete and turn in homework assignments perform significantly better in school than those of similar ability who do not do homework (Olympia et al., 1994). Homework is valuable because it gives students a chance to practice, extend, and entrench the academic skills taught in school. Parents can be instrumental in encouraging and motivating their children to complete homework. This homework contract intervention (adapted from Miller & Kelly, 1994) uses goal-setting, a written contract, and rewards to boost student completion (and accuracy) of homework. Students also learn the valuable skills of breaking down academic assignments into smaller, more manageable subtasks and setting priorities for work completion.
