Students design and build prototypes for protective eyewear. They choose different activities or sports that require protective eyewear and design a device for that particular use. Students learn about the many ways in which the eyes can be damaged and how engineers incorporate different features and materials into eyewear designs to best protect the eyes.

Students learn how biomedical engineers work with engineers and other professionals to develop dependable medical devices. Specifically, they learn about suction pumps, which are important devices to keep in good repair, especially when they are used in remote locations. Student teams brainstorm, sketch, design and create prototypes of suction pump protection devices to keep fluid from backing up and ruining the pump motors. Using a real suction pump, they conduct repeated trials to test their devices for reliability, making improvements as necessary.

Rail safety is a shared responsibility and we need educators’ help to ensure that children in communities across the country stay safe around tracks and trains. By working together, we can ensure young Canadians are more aware of the hazards around railway property—and save lives in the process.

After conducting an assessment that showed their building’s vulnerability to wind damage, the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami looked for a way to improve safety for patients and staff.

First-time licence applicants must pass the Canadian Firearms Safety Course before applying for a Possession and Acquisition Licence. After the in-class instruction, you will do a written and practical test.

Anyone 12 years or older can take the CFSC. Children under 12 can take the course, but only for educational purposes. They will not do the written or practical exams. To get a Minor's Licence to borrow and use non-restricted firearms, the minor must be between 12 and 17 years old.

This video covers different machinery hazards workers may encounter on the farm and provides information on how to control them.

This mobile training program provides specialized critical care skill training to STARS crews and other emergency care providers. The first mobile program of its kind in North America, it features a human patient simulator which replicates complex medical and traumatic problems over and over again. It offers medical personnel the opportunity to test and practice their reactions and skills, leading to a high degree of familiarity and confidence.

The mannequin: speaks and breathes, blinks and has reactive pupils, has a heartbeat and a pulse
accurately mirrors human responses to such procedures as CPR, intravenous medication, intubation, ventilation and catheterization.

The mannequins have been installed in four motorhomes, creating large mobile emergency rooms. Additionally, STARS has a wireless mannequin that can be transported in a specially-modified SUV. This mannequin can be used in a variety of environments including hospital emergency rooms, classrooms, and mock accidents scenes.

Based on a real workplace example, this animation demonstrates how different attitudes drive our behaviour and, in turn, the results we get when engaging with safety. Safety Attitudes at Work is an excerpt from a Sentis research study of more than 21,000 participants from 73 sites across agriculture, construction, government, healthcare, manufacturing, mining, oil and gas, and utilities.

• A look at the wide range and types of Screwdrivers and their safe and correct usage
• The correct pair of Pliers for a particular task
• Hammers, their types and how to use them safely and correctly
• The correct use of Hacksaws and Blade types

This program is aimed at all users of basic Hand Tools, whether they be students or experienced trades people who may require a refresher on safe and correct usage."

Students learn about the types of seismic waves produced by earthquakes and how they move the Earth. The dangers of earthquakes are presented as well as the necessity for engineers to design structures for earthquake-prone areas that are able to withstand the forces of seismic waves. Students learn how engineers build shake tables that simulate the ground motions of the Earth caused by seismic waves in order to test the seismic performance of buildings.

This site offers a wealth of resources on safety for youth at work.

Students learn about how engineers design and build shake tables to test the ability of buildings to withstand the various types of seismic waves generated by earthquakes. Just like engineers, students design and build shake tables to test their own model buildings made of toothpicks and mini marshmallows. Once students are satisfied with the performance of their buildings, they put them through a one-minute simulated earthquake challenge.
