Teachers often find it difficult to monitor the frequency of problem student behaviors. In this clever behavior-management strategy, the teacher uses keeps track of student behaviors using rubber-bands placed around the wrist.

Debbie Clark's 8th grade science students take several days to complete their Rube Goldberg contraptions. Bringing things from home, they experiment with the parts, design their contraption, and make a blueprint for it before beginning to build. This is a lesson that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork, creativity and design.

Rural life is quite separate and unlike urban life in most developing nations. In Cambodia, there is a great contrast between rural and urban life. The rice fields of Kampong Cham and the bustling streets of Phnom Penh are worlds apart. The purpose of these three lessons is to provide students with an overview of Cambodian rural life through lecture, reading, and writing. Students will analyze demographic data, write a creative story using the viewpoint of a village participant and critically discuss issues of poverty and modernization in rural Cambodia. Finally, they will reflect on how their own values influence the way they view life in rural Cambodia. These lessons are designed for a high school elective about Cambodia, but could certainly be used by any high school or middle school students studying Cambodia.

Same But Different is a powerful routine for use in math classrooms. The activity of same but different is an activity where two things are compared, calling attention to both how they are the same and how they are different.

This apparent paradox is the beauty of the activity. It is important to notice the word BUT. Instead of making a choice – am I going to prove that these are the same or am I going to prove that they are different – students are considering how two items can be both. This is a critically important distinction.

Not same OR different, rather same BUT different.

There are categories for addition/subtraction, early numeracy, multiplication/division, measurement, place value, fractions, ratios, geometry, algebra, and high school math.
