This is a reading improvement support handbook that focuses on Grades 1 to 3 effective instructional practices, curriculum reading expectations, assessment and reading interventions. Saskatchewan Reads is available online in English and French at saskatchewanreads.wordpress.com.

This is an activity about satellite flight. Learners will first watch a video about the orbit and formation of the MMS satellites to learn about their flight configuration. After, they will research similar facts about other types of satellites. Next, learners will compute the volume of MMS' tetrahedral flight configuration and investigate how the tetrahedral volume changes as the satellites change positions. Finally, they will create a report that outlines their findings.This activity requires student access to internet accessible computers. This is lesson three as part of the MMS Mission Educator's Instructional Guide.

How to administer the assessments:
• Literally only takes 5 minutes
• Four choices for each grade (student passage page and teacher recording page)
• Student reads for 60 seconds and teacher records errors
• After 60 seconds you read the story to the student (while they follow along) to remove any difficulties s/he may had had in word recognition or fluency that could hamper comprehension
• Remove passage from student and ask what they remember from the passage
• Prompting is allowed, but noted

Learners will work collaboratively to create abstracts detailing their knowledge of sunspots and solar flares and then present their work to the entire audience. A background understanding of our Sun and its features is needed prior to starting this activity. This is activity 4 in Exploring Magnetism in Solar Flares.

This is an activity about sunlight as an energy source. Learners will create a plant box and observe that a plant will grow toward the Sun, its primary source of energy. This hands-on activity is an additional lesson as part of the book, The Day Joshua Jumped Too Much.

The main areas of focus in the second grade math curriculum are: understanding the base-ten system within 1,000, including place value and skip-counting in fives, tens, and hundreds; developing fluency with addition and subtraction, including solving word problems; regrouping in addition and subtraction; describing and analyzing shapes; using and understanding standard units of measure; working with money and time; and introducing multiplication.

This is a self-assessment tool that is designed for administrators to use to reflect on their schools’ success in supporting smooth transitions for students. We know that schools are generally welcoming to students who arrive in September or at other expected transition times, but sometimes in the hectic world of schools the important work to welcome, orient and support new students is overlooked. Many students who transfer at unexpected times are in challenging circumstances and need transition support. I encourage you to support your school administrators in establishing strong communication and relationship protocols that support smooth student transitions. The following are self checklists for students to evaluate themselves on learning behaviors and listening.

This activity makes students aware of how well they are self-managing or regulating.
It ASKS : "Today when you are working, there will be a clock or timer on the SMARTBoard. At random intervals, you will hear a beep or a bell. When you hear the sound, reflect on your behaviour. Are you self-managing?"
Students complete the chart attached to measure their growth and ability to self-manage or regulate.
