We have a lot of water on Earth, but we also can't actually drink much of it... or use it for farming. That's because most of the water on Earth is saltwater. We humans, like a lot of living things, need freshwater to survive. In this episode of Crash Course Kids, Sabrina talks about the difference between freshwater and saltwater and why freshwater is so important.

Developed for the second grade. A biodome is a self-sustaining habitat for plants. Students will make a biodome in a recycled soda bottle and watch as their seeds grow. Students will observe and understand how the water in the biodome continues to recycle itself through condensation and evaporation.Biology In Elementary Schools is a Saint Michael's College student project. The teaching ideas on this page have been found, refined, and developed by students in a college-level course on the teaching of biology at the elementary level. Unless otherwise noted, the lesson plans have been tried at least once by students from our partner schools. Mrs. Crowell takes her 2nd and 3rd graders on a nature walk where they use a dichotomous key to identify different species they encounter. This lesson shows a simple way to take students out on a walk and teach them how to identify species, no matter where they are.

This lesson, in which students research worms in order to create a classroom habitat, incorporates reading and writing across content areas as well as math and science activities.

We know that if we take an animal out of its habitat, it will have a difficult time surviving. We also know that there's a lot more going on in ecosystems than just temperature. In fact, there are so many elements in ecosystems, that if just one leaves or gets out of whack, it can be terrible for the whole thing. This video examines how Spider Monkeys are a vital component of a rain forest habitat and what would happen if they weren't part of the ecosystem.

Well, this has to do with Habitats and how animals (including humans) are suited for living in one place over another. In this episode, Sabrina talks about how these Habitats form Food Webs and how those Food Webs help us understand a lot about the world.

Today we're going to take a hike up Mt. Kilimanjaro so we can talk about how the geosphere changes based on many different things. On the same mountain we can travel through many different habitats like rain forests, savannas, and moorlands. Let's take a walk with Sabrina and see how!

Students were given a copy of the grid listing habitats. Each child was asked to select one square on the grid and then research a list of animals that live in that habitat. They recorded only information for one of the grids. When this was completed, each student shared what they learned with the class, and each student filled in the new section on their chart. Our last task was for the students to complete the exit slip, explaining how this made learning things easier. They all decided it was easier to research part of the information and share.
