Sun West Student Leadership Overview
Students are challenged to design, build and test small-scale launchers while they learn and follow the steps of the engineering design process. For the challenge, the "slingers" must be able to aim and launch Ping-Pong balls 20 feet into a goal using ordinary building materials such as tape, string, plastic spoons, film canisters, plastic cups, rubber bands and paper clips. Students first learn about defining the problem and why each step of the process is important. Teams develop solutions and determine which is the best based on design requirements. After making drawings, constructing and testing prototypes, they evaluate the results and make recommendations for potential second-generation prototypes.
After completing a pre-assessment survey of their knowledge of electricity, students compare how much energy different types of light bulbs use and relate these to their monthly power bill. They then evaluate the short term economic and carbon footprint aspects of the energy alternatives available.
If we do nothing now, future generations will lose the purity and unspoiled nature of the Pacific Islands. As the biggest employer and income earner in most South Pacific nations, the tourism industry has a responsibility to show leadership in the protection of our environment and communities we operate in. Akshay is an ivy-league educated professional who has dedicated his career to tourism in the Pacific Islands.
Passionate about the South Pacific and its rich social and cultural diversity and beauty, Akshay is also fascinated by renewable energy. He aims to inspire tourism businesses in the region to be more socially and environmentally conscious, and to create a pathway for sustainable tourism in the future. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community.
Using a household fan, cardboard box and paper towels, student teams design and build their own evaporative cooler prototype devices. They learn about the process that cools water during the evaporation of water. They make calculations to determine a room's cooling load, and thus determine the swamp cooler size. This activity adds to students' understanding of the behind-the-scenes mechanical devices that condition and move air within homes and buildings for human health and comfort.
In this hands-on activity, students construct a simple switch and determine what objects and what types of materials can be used to close a switch in a circuit and light a light bulb.

Students come to understand static electricity by learning about the nature of electric charge, and different methods for charging objects. In a hands-on activity, students induce an electrical charge on various objects, and experiment with electrical repulsion and attraction.
Food-safety training is provided by the Saskatchewan Health Authority to educate food handlers on the dangers associated with food service and methods they can use to lower the risks of food-borne illness. Our classes are intended for front-line foodservice workers like cooks, servers, kitchen helpers, and dishwashers. During the course, we cover foodborne illness, receiving and storing food, preparing and serving food, cleaning and sanitizing.

In building birdhouses, students needed to think critically and problem solve how they were to construct them. Students were given a choice to look at an exemplar (a birdhouse I already constructed) or plans that provided written and schematic instructions. As students built their birdhouses I would ask a variety of open, guided questions (based on Blooms Taxonomy) to engage their critical thinking. I wanted students to think about the process they were using to build their bird houses and the techniques they were employing in their construction. I wanted students to reflect and question themselves to see if they could improve upon what they were doing.

Students explore how the efficiency of a solar photovoltaic (PV) panel is affected by the ambient temperature. They learn how engineers predict the power output of a PV panel at different temperatures and examine some real-world engineering applications used to control the temperature of PV panels.
Students are introduced to the health risks caused by cooking and heating with inefficient cook stoves inside homes, a common practice in rural developing communities. Students simulate the cook stove scenario and use the engineering design process, including iterative trials, to increase warmth inside a building while reducing air quality problems. Students then collect and graph data, and analyze their findings.
