Powerful Thinking Routines - graphic organizers
Rating
0.0 stars

Project Zero at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education has created a collection of Core Thinking Routines as part of their Visible Thinking Project. Teachers can view the entire collection on the Project Zero website (https://pz.harvard.edu/thinking-routines#CoreThinkingRoutines), where each routine is described in detail (e.g., purpose, application, launch) in both English and Spanish.

These routines encourage students to be intentional thinkers.

What do they know or notice?
What is their perspective or position on an issue or idea?
How can they support their position or thinking?
What do they wonder? What are they confused about?
How has their thinking changed? What caused that change?

The Power of Plants
Rating
0.0 stars

This plant-rooted program contains 6 distinct activities. Students will have the chance to exercise their creativity through botanical drawing and creating a classroom herbarium by pressing and preserving plant specimens. They will learn about plant journeys: from farm to table, and seed dispersal. Finally, they will get to know trees, inside and out, from species identification to age rings.

The Power of Plants is a collection of six complete lesson plans that raises awareness about the importance of biodiversity in everyday life.

o Lesson 1: Two classes - Students will explore these different art forms by creating two artworks using the same plant as a reference. Artists’ statements will express the intentions and design decisions inspired by the art form and floral specimen.

o Lesson 2: - One week - Students will collect and preserve plant specimens to create a class herbarium and explore the different uses for a herbarium.

o Lesson 3: Three classes - In this activity, students will explore some mechanisms used by plants to disperse their seeds by creating model fruit and evaluating the relationship between the fruit’s structure and its dispersal ability.

o Lesson 4: Five classes - Students will explore the concept of “food miles”, visit a farm, farmer’s market, or grocery store and write a newspaper article or editorial summarizing their findings.

o Lesson 5: Four classes - Students will examine the leaves, identify the species, make bark rubbings, measure girth, calculate age, and approximate the height of a single tree. Tree profiles are then collected to create a class encyclopedia.

o Lesson 6: One class - In this activity, students will examine tree rings and discover the secrets preserved within its growth rings.

First Nations peoples are the original inhabitants of most of the land now called Canada. First Nations people prefer the name First Nations when referring to the collective. Individual Nations are defined by their own languages, cultural, and spiritual traditions rather than criteria developed or established by settler governments or academics.

Printable Cards for Irregular “Heart” Words
Rating
0.0 stars

From UFLI - "An irregular word is one that cannot be readily decoded because either:
o it includes grapheme-phoneme correspondences that are unique to that word or a few words (permanently irregular words), or
o the student has not yet learned all the grapheme-phoneme correspondences in the word (temporarily irregular words).

Contrary to popular belief, students should not be taught to memorize irregular words by sight. In most irregular words, only one or two letters do not conform to their usual sound correspondence. This means that most irregular words are at least partially decodable. Rather than relying on visual memorization, instruction in irregular words should promote students’ orthographic mapping. This means that the focus should be on connecting the letters in the word to the sounds they represent, even if the correspondence is an unusual one. To teach new irregular words, you should guide your students in
identifying the irregular part of the word—the letter or letters that don’t follow regular phonetic rules. These are the parts of irregular words that must be learned “by heart.”
