About Ocean School:
Ocean School is a free environmental education resource for students in grades 5–12. Our inspiring and immersive multimedia resources featuring linear and 360˚ videos, VR/AR, interactive media and hands-on projects and activities are offered in English and French. Our cross-curricular content spans science, social studies, language arts and more!

Ocean School is the result of a dynamic partnership between the National Film Board of Canada and the Ocean Frontier Institute at Dalhousie University. A team of scientists, educators, and storytellers are creating innovative and engaging content that illustrates how we all have a role to play in protecting the ocean and seeks to inspire the next generation to take action!

This lesson focuses on the many professions within the Agriculture and Food sector. Students will gain an appreciation and knowledge of the multitude of professions that exist within the Agriculture and Food sectors, while also understanding the importance of everyday food production and sustainability to the global population. The result is an immersive, multimedia experience that brings players on a deep dive into key sequences and major science themes covered in the documentary and digital series. Using a combination of clickable 360 landscapes, 2D and 3D videos, animations, interviews with scientists, and mini-games, the Polar Lab takes players onto the ice and into the lab in search of evidence to answer big questions about Earth’s climate—past, present, and future. It also puts them in the driver’s seat, as they work with host Caitlin at “Polar Lab HQ” to collect data from the field, answer questions, and play games to keep the story moving through three action-packed missions…and what a story it is.

The Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guides for Grades 5-9 (2016) and Science First Peoples Teacher Resource Guide Secondary (2019) were developed by the First Nations Education Steering Committee and First Nations Schools Association.

These guides support educators integrating the rich body of First Peoples knowledge and perspectives into Science courses and other curricular areas.

Seek by iNaturalist is an iOS/Android app that helps its users identify plants, animals, and fungi in their local area. Kids can see what species have been previously observed nearby, and can also photograph specimens themselves, either directly in the app or by pulling in photos from their device's photo roll. The app will then use its image recognition technology, based on the iNaturalist library of images, to match the observed plant, animal, or fungi to a database. If there's a match, a kid's find is placed in his or her collection, but it must be an exact match; when the app can't narrow it down to an exact species, it isn't added. As kids collect more and more species, they earn badges inside the app.

Once kids have made a match, or if they're perusing the lists of species that have been previously observed near them, the app shows facts about the species, including how many have been observed, the best time of year to spot the species, a map of where it has been seen, the scientific name, other photos of it, and a general description. Also, kids' own photographed sightings end up in the collection of local images, but it all remains anonymous. There's no registration required (or even available), and no user data is collected.

The Lab is a free, interactive platform for discovering millions of authentic digital resources, creating content with online tools, and sharing in the Smithsonian's expansive community of knowledge and learning.
