You've heard of choice boards, but explore boards are different, and I really think you'll want to give them a try!
Explore Boards are great to introduce a new unit of study to develop background knowledge and vocabulary. They can also be used for studying, becoming an expert in an area to share back (like a jigsaw), support inquiry or research projects, provide context, etc.!
These boards promote personalized learning - student voice and choice as well as autonomy. You can let the students free for 20-30 minutes to explore the options as they see fit, or assign a few options to a group to share back, and students can refer back to these Explore Boards during the entire unit to build a deeper understanding. The only limit on how to use these boards is your imagination!

Students will discover the Past, Present, Evolution and Future of agriculture in Saskatchewan.
This comprehensive website contains a great deal of information and there are many curricular connections to grades 3 – 6 Science, Social Studies, and English Language Arts.

- Simple Lessons - Depending on the sections your students study and activities undertaken, different outcomes may be met. There are several ‘grab and go’ activities for students, available in both pdf and word documents.

Students conduct an experiment to study the acceleration of a mobile Android device. During the experiment, they run an application created with MIT's App Inventor that monitors linear acceleration in one-dimension. Students use an acceleration vs. time equation to construct an approximate velocity vs. time graph. Students will understand the relationship between the object's mass and acceleration and how that relates to the force applied to the object, which is Newton's second law of motion.
In Massachusetts, Manchester-by-the-Sea's wastewater treatment plant is located right on the coast. The town's water utility is working with the EPA's Climate Ready Water Utilities program to consider its adaptation options.
In this activity, student teams conduct a quantitative exploration of the connections between parts of the Earth system, through examination of a time series of environmental data maps. They will also learn about X-rays in general, how they work and their different uses, along with other imaging modalities. In this interactive map activity, students will explore Canada's geography. Data layers include Canada's climate, Canada's Ecology (Ecozones and Ecoregions), Canada's landforms and Population Density 2016. Students will also explore the federal elections from 2000-2019.
Students observe multiple examples of capillary action. First they observe the shape of a glass-water meniscus and explain its shape in terms of the adhesive attraction of the water to the glass. Then they study capillary tubes and observe water climbing due to capillary action in the glass tubes. Finally, students experience a real-world application of capillary action by designing and using "capillary siphons" to filter water.
