Through this activity students will learn about food security and some of the causes of food insecurity both globally and at home. Then students will explore how food fits into a household budget and explore how some real-world challenges can affect the budgets and food choices of families. Students learn that when one part of a food web changes, it impacts other parts of the web. Students learn that stewardship decisions impact the different components of food webs in different ways.

We know that if we take an animal out of its habitat, it will have a difficult time surviving. We also know that there's a lot more going on in ecosystems than just temperature. In fact, there are so many elements in ecosystems, that if just one leaves or gets out of whack, it can be terrible for the whole thing. Students review information learned during the past five lessons and activities of the Introduction to Engineering unit. Working in teams, they create flyers and short quizzes about various types of engineering to share with the class and collect into a "Olympic Engineering Binder" for the class to keep.

To this end, students develop their understanding of visible air pollutants with an incomplete combustion demonstration, a "smog in a jar" demonstration, and by building simple particulate matter collectors.

In the first of two lessons of this curricular unit, students are introduced to the concept of friction as a force that impedes motion when two surfaces are in contact. Student teams use spring scales to drag objects, such as a ceramic coffee cup, along a table top or the floor, measuring the frictional force that exists between the moving object and the surface it slides on. By modifying the bottom surface of the object, students find out what kinds of surfaces generate more or less friction. They also discover that both static and kinetic friction are involved when an object initially at rest is caused to slide across a surface. In the second lesson of the unit, students design and conduct experiments to determine the effects of weight and surface area on friction. They discover that weight affects normal friction (the friction that results from surface roughness), but for very smooth surfaces, the friction due to molecular attraction is affected by contact area.

Students use a simple set up consisting of a current carrying wire and a magnet to explore the forces which enable biomedical imaging. In doing so, students run a current through a wire and then hold magnets in various positions to establish and explore the magnetic force acting on the wire. They move the magnets and change the current in the wire to explore how the force changes.

Use this activity to explore forces acting on objects, practice graphing experimental data, and introduce the algebra concepts of slope and intercept of a line. A wooden 2 x 4 beam is set on top of two scales. Students learn how to conduct an experiment by applying loads at different locations along the beam, recording the exact position of the applied load and the reaction forces measured by the scales at each end of the beam. In addition, students analyze the experiment data with the use of a chart and a table, and model/graph linear equations to describe relationships between independent and dependent variables.

Students will conduct a number of investigations involving density and buoyancy to understand the forces applied to objects and the resulting interactions among them.

Students conduct several simple lab activities to learn about the five fundamental load types that can act on structures: tension, compression, shear, bending and torsion. In this activity, students play the role of molecules in a beam that is subject to various loading schemes.

Forensic Science is the application of the scientific method to solving mysteries. Forensic scientists draw on skills from a number of disciplines in order to gather evidence and draw conclusions about an event. Teachers may use the subject of forensic science to stimulate interest in the various disciplines of science among their students. The discipline is particularly useful in the classroom because it emphasizes hands-on learning and gives students the opportunity to develop their reasoning skills.
Many of the activities on this site use computers and computational science. Such methods are useful to forensic scientists because they allow scientists to view evidence with greater clarity, to simulate specific events and to save time by automating tedious processes.

Damage to trees by disease, air pollution, weather, or human activities can affect the health of forests and can also be an indication of overall forest health. Count all the trees in the plot, marking the trees with colored chalk to help you keep track. Note trees that have one or more signs of disease or damage (see below). To count it as diseased or damaged, 10 percent or more of the tree should be affected. Calculate the percentage of all trees in the plot that have such signs.

This documentary introduces us to thousands of Indigenous Canadians who enlisted and fought alongside their countrymen and women during World War II, even though they could not be conscripted. Ironically, while they fought for the freedom of others, they were being denied equality in their own country and returned home to find their land seized.

We will also go over the negative consequences of rationalization in organizations.
