In this 4 lesson unit plan students will examine identity and ways to solve problems of portrayal through caricature. Discussions about the 'beauty myth' self concept and risk taking will be explored as students examine the work of artists and create their personal self portrait.

Fostering Remembrance is a part of everything The Legion does. Through The Royal Canadian Legion's longstanding Annual Poster and Literary Contests, Canadian school children honour Canada’s Veterans through creative art and writing, and help perpetuate Remembrance.

Contests are available for students 5 to 18 for posters (colour & black and white), essays and and now a video entry category as well.

Students identify the narrative elements in a work of art and learn how artists use symbolic imagery to communicate the larger narrative of a person's life. Students then write their own narratives about an historic figure and use visual symbols to create an image about that person that communicates important events in his or her personal narrative.

The free art lessons on this site are designed for middle and high school students, beginning with art lesson plans for beginning students, through intermediate and advanced students. The lessons cover a wide range of topics in a variety of mediums.

Students learn the value of writing and art in science and engineering. They acquire vocabulary that is appropriate for explaining visual art and learn about visual design principles (contrast, alignment, repetition and proximity) and elements (lines, color, texture, shape, size, value and space) that are helpful when making visual aids. A PowerPoint(TM) presentation heightens students' awareness of the connection between art and engineering in order to improve the presentation of results, findings, concepts, information and prototype designs. Students also learn about the science and engineering research funding process that relies on effective proposal presentations, as well as some thermal conductivity / heat flow basics including the real-world example of a heat sink which prepares them for the associated activity in which they focus on creating diagrams to communicate their own collected experimental data.

Students create a mixed media artwork about an at-risk species using black shapes on a white background. They paint each black shape with small, beadlike circles in a style similar to that of Métis artist Christi Belcourt.
