I Am Stronger
Rating
0.0 stars

I Am Stronger is an initiative designed to stop the activities of bullying and cyber-bullying. This is done through awareness and education around cyber safety, the effects of bullying, and supporting youth-led initiatives.

I Am Stronger believes that the answers to solving the issues of bullying and cyber-bullying lie in the hearts and minds of those who experience it on a daily basis - the youth of today.

The Ministry of Education has partnered up with I Am Stronger to provide small grants of up to $1000 for youth-led initiatives to adress bullying and cyber-bullying within the province of Saskatchewan. The goal is to empower youth to take their ideas and turn them into positive action that can influence social change in schools, communities and online. The grant provides youth the opportunity to collaborate with others to find solutions to stop bullying, and then turn their ideas into action while inspiring others to do the same. We believe that together we can all make a difference.

Students will analyze "Man with a Hoe" by Jean-Francois Millet, and learn how the artist's use of shape and space creates emphasis. Students will discuss their interpretations of the painting and provide visual evidence to back up their ideas. They will create a persona poem that demonstrates their interpretation of how the man in the painting feels. Students will then illustrate their understanding of how shape and space creates emphasis by drawing a person in their family who works hard.

Students capture and examine air particles to gain an appreciation of how much dust, pollen and other particulate matter is present in the air around them. Students place "pollution detectors" at various locations to determine which places have a lot of particles in the air and which places do not have as many. Quantifying and describing these particles is a first step towards engineering methods of removing contaminants from the air.

Students develop their understanding of the effects of invisible air pollutants with a rubber band air test, a bean plant experiment and by exploring engineering roles related to air pollution. In an associated literacy activity, students develop visual literacy and write photograph captions. They learn how images are manipulated for a powerful effect and how a photograph can make the invisible (such as pollutants) visible. Note: You may want to set up the activities for Air Pollution unit, Lessons 2 and 3, simultaneously as they require extended data collection time and can share collection sites.
