Often, we are not informed in school on how to navigate the world in regards to things like finances, accessing health care, dating, relationships, balancing work and play, partying and staying safe, managing day-to-day stress, and entering into the workforce. This course will provide an opportunity for students to discuss these topics with each other and the facilitator. Together, we will learn how to navigate the tricky and often overwhelming world of adulthood.
This course examines:
• Life Skill development for adulthood
• Basic understanding of personal finance
• Basic understanding of healthy relationship development
• Entering the workforce
• Enjoying recreational time safely
• Stress management

After catastrophic flooding in New Orleans destroyed two hospitals, the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System is planning a replacement facility that will incorporate resilience against future extreme events.
The provision of northern health care entails many unique challenges and circumstances that are rarely represented in mainstream health sciences education. This OpenEd Resource provides accessible content on health and health care from a northern perspective for the growing number of health professionals being educated in northern communities.

Students learn how biomedical engineers work with engineers and other professionals to develop dependable medical devices. Specifically, they learn about suction pumps, which are important devices to keep in good repair, especially when they are used in remote locations. Student teams brainstorm, sketch, design and create prototypes of suction pump protection devices to keep fluid from backing up and ruining the pump motors. Using a real suction pump, they conduct repeated trials to test their devices for reliability, making improvements as necessary.

Spotlight on Careers is an opportunity for secondary students to explore potential future career paths. Participants in a Spotlight are exposed to post-secondary opportunities, hands-on experiences, and mentorship from professionals in a specific industry.
Students learn about providing healthcare in a global setting and the importance of wearing protective equipment when treating patients with infectious diseases like Ebola. They learn about biohazard suits, heat transfer through conduction and convection and the engineering design cycle. Student teams design, create and test (and improve) their own Ebola biohazard suit prototypes that cover one arm and hand, including a ventilation system to cool the inside of the suit.
