Science News for Students - News from all fields of science for readers of any age
Rating
0.0 stars

"Teachers can use the site as in-class reading material to supplement units in science, math, and language arts. The readings are streamlined, age-appropriate versions of articles on the adult Science News site and provide helpful tools for tackling the task of reading scientific texts. The Going Deeper link for each article takes students to a related article on the companion Science News site with more detailed information. Kids can also use the simpler readings on Science News for Students as support articles to build their basic understanding before moving on to more complex text of the same topic. If you scroll to the bottom of the articles, many of them contain “Power Words” and their definitions. Reviewing the words in advance can help kids better understand the text. Some articles also contain questions for kids to answer while reading." (Common Sense Media)

Seek by iNaturalist
Rating
0.0 stars

Seek by iNaturalist is an iOS/Android app that helps its users identify plants, animals, and fungi in their local area. Kids can see what species have been previously observed nearby, and can also photograph specimens themselves, either directly in the app or by pulling in photos from their device's photo roll. The app will then use its image recognition technology, based on the iNaturalist library of images, to match the observed plant, animal, or fungi to a database. If there's a match, a kid's find is placed in his or her collection, but it must be an exact match; when the app can't narrow it down to an exact species, it isn't added. As kids collect more and more species, they earn badges inside the app.

Once kids have made a match, or if they're perusing the lists of species that have been previously observed near them, the app shows facts about the species, including how many have been observed, the best time of year to spot the species, a map of where it has been seen, the scientific name, other photos of it, and a general description. Also, kids' own photographed sightings end up in the collection of local images, but it all remains anonymous. There's no registration required (or even available), and no user data is collected.

Slow Reveal Graphs
Rating
0.0 stars

Slow Reveal Graph (#slowrevealgraph) is an instructional routine that promotes sensemaking about data. This highly engaging routine uses scaffolded visuals and discourse to help students (in K-12 and beyond) make sense of data. As more and more of the graph is revealed, students refine their interpretation and construct meaning, often in surprising ways. This routine increases access for students without sacrificing rigor or engagement.

You will find all types of graphs for all ages of learners from elementary to high school.

Here are the steps:
- It starts with a graph that has been stripped of context: its numbers, its labels, its title.
- The teacher facilitates a discussion around what students notice and wonder. (The slides give discussion suggestions)
- Then another slide is revealed.
- Students identify what information is new.
- Then another slide is revealed.
- Again, students identify what information is new (the title) and discuss how this changes their understanding of the graph.
- As more slides are added, more insight into this data representation is revealed.

The introductory page for the graph also offers more information about the context for this graph, other content connections, and paired texts for students to explore.

‎Snapseed - Photo Editing App
Rating
0.0 stars

Available for both iOS and Android: (copy and paste url into your device browser)
- Apple: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/snapseed/id439438619
- Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.niksoftware.snapseed&hl=en_CA&gl=US

Snapseed is a free photo-editing app where you can take photos in the app and edit them, or edit photos already in your camera roll.. It includes a large number of preset filters to apply to your photos, but there are also 29 tools you can use to apply precise and fine-tuned effects, such as tune, curves, crop, brush, perspective, HDR scape, vintage, retro lux, portrait, lens blur, frames, vignette, text, and more. You can also save a combination of edits as a particular "look" that you can then easily apply in one tap to other photos.

There are built-in tutorials that quickly show you how to achieve certain looks, from vignettes to vintage postcards. Each one is very short, listing the tools that are used in the tutorial, then going through what you need to do with step-by-step visual examples.

One particularly handy aspect of Snapseed is how easy it is to undo and revise work. At any time, you can undo or change any edits made so far, allowing you to access each edit separately. Then, once you're done with your image, you can share it, open it in another app, export it (creating a copy with permanent changes), or save it, which saves the image along with its edits that you can still undo/change in the future.
