We’ve mentioned already that there’s a lot of money in media and a huge chunk of that money is spent on trying to get you to do something – buy something, vote a certain way, change a behavior. How does advertising work? And what’s the difference between advertising, public relations, and propaganda? We’re going to talk about all that and more today.
Identity is a major focus of the grade 6 curriculum both in ELA and in Arts Ed. therefore I wanted to create a project that could be incorporated into both subjects.
Project: The students were given the task to create an infographic that would represent themselves – a bio that includes their personal values and opinions. I invited Arlene Low into the class to introduce the project and explain what infographics are.

According to Innu oral tradition, the world is an island created by wolverine and mink after a great flood. The archaeological record shows that the Innu and their ancestors have occupied a large portion of Labrador and eastern Quebec for two thousand or more years. The Innu refer to this territory as "Nitassinan."

It is intended to support educators in developing their understanding of inquiry-based learning, its application in the Health and Physical Education Curriculum, and the benefts it provides to students.
This guide is divided into four sections to support educators in exploring inquiry in health and physical education. Section One provides an overview of inquiry-based learning as it applies to Health and Physical Education. Section Two provides an overview of assessment in inquiry-based learning and related implementation tools. Section Three demonstrates how educators may apply an inquiry-based learning approach in Health and Physical Education, with guidelines for educators to use as they consider different components of the Inquiry Framework. Section Four provides sample inquiry plans for both elementary and secondary Health and Physical Education, including related implementation tools.

We have been using more Inquiry and Project Based Learning in our Grade 4 Social Studies class at OES this year, with the students learning to think critically and work collaboratively as they investigated the “big questions” tied to the SS outcomes. They were encouraged to reach beyond the classroom and access resource people outside the school in their research. The Grade 4 Social Studies curriculum is based on Saskatchewan content and we were fortunate to connect with some excellent sources and learning partners from all around the province.
Pixar's "Inside Out" is a movie that's all about feelings, and this makes it perfect for sparking discussions with kids about social and emotional learning. Since the central characters all embody a different emotion, students learn to see parts of themselves or their experiences in each character.
As we know, watching a movie can involve way more than just watching. Use the "Inside Out Movie Guide" (with lesson materials) to explore how joy and sadness can come together and make sense of the mess of our emotions.
(Grades 3–6)
***Sun West teachers can access the movie Inside Out using ACF Streaming.
Pobble365 helps to keep students writing. Every day, Pobble365 provides a weird, wonderful, and/or thought provoking image to spark ideas for discussions and writing. It is free and along with a different idea-inspiring image every day, Pobble365 provides a story starter, discussion questions, as well as sentence challenges and “sick sentences” to build language skills. If students don’t have online access, images and writing supports can be printed and photocopied.
The activities include a prompt, sentences stems, vocabulary bank, questions, and challenges to help you scaffold your lesson.
You will need to sign up and make an account to access the resources, but it is free to do so and each day includes a free prompt. You can also create your own!
Get your students writing every single day!
Inspiring Success: First Nations and Métis PreK-12 Education Policy Framework was renewed in collaboration among First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders and Traditional Knowledge Keepers, post-secondary and provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education stakeholders, and the Ministry of Education. The vision of Inspiring Success is a provincial Prekindergarten to Grade 12 education system that foundationally places Indigenous knowledge systems, cultures and languages within the structures, policies and curricula to ensure an equitable and inclusive system that benefits all learners. As such, this renewed policy framework guides actions at all levels of the education sector and is aligned with the goals of the Education Sector Strategic Plan. Inspiring Success supports reconciliation, treaty education, Indigenous cultures and languages in the classroom, as well as the infusion of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into all renewed curricula to benefit all learners.
The ministry is committed to facilitate the sharing of information, tools and processes useful to school divisions, teachers and administrators in planning and implementing actions in First Nations and Métis education, in alignment with the policy goals. Improving First Nations, Métis and Inuit student achievement and the learning outcomes for all students is a shared responsibility throughout the PreK-12 education sector.
As a first step, it is recommended to become familiar with the policy framework.
Implementation
We heard from First Nations and Métis organizations, Elders, provincial education stakeholders and post-secondary institutions about how crucial implementation will be for this policy framework. We acknowledge the considerable number of initiatives and programs put in place by government and by school divisions; however, there is more work to do. A variety of tools and resources are available to assist with creating awareness, building support, planning and implementation, including a webinar presentation, PowerPoint slideshow, promotional handout and dialogue questions. Many links are provided within each goal area as suggested resources for teachers and administrators. More will be added as new information and tools become available.
