6 GAP Career Education

This is a collection of resources to support teaching Grade 6 Career Education in Saskatchewan.  Career Education is a comprehensive program that prepares students for their future. It aims to develop a strong foundation of career readiness skills and knowledge by helping students identify their strengths and interests (learner profiles), explore various careers and industries, and learn about the education and training required for different occupations. Students also develop essential skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and critical thinking, which are crucial for success in any career. The curriculum is designed to help students make informed decisions about their career pathways and develop the skills they need to pursue their goals.

In this lesson students are introduced to the concept of “avatars” and share their experiences creating and playing avatars in video games and virtual worlds. They then create avatars using a program that is intentionally limited in terms of available body types and gender markers, first creating an avatar of their own gender and then of the opposite gender, and then discuss the program and relate it to representations of gender and body image in games and virtual worlds and in other media. Students then create avatars using a much more flexible version of the program and compare that experience to the more limited version. Finally, students use the more versatile program to create avatars that represent how they see themselves and how they would like others to see them online and reflect on the choices that went into creating them.

Our approach to civic education is about providing opportunities for students to experience their democracy first-hand rather than by reading about it in a textbook. By reaching students throughout their school career, during and between election periods, we hope to prepare them to be responsible and informed citizens.

CIVIX programming focuses on the themes of elections, government budgets, elected representatives and digital media literacy. Programs available include:

(1) Student Vote - an election enables teachers to bring democracy alive in the classroom

(2) Student Budget Consultation - combines civic education and financial literacy

(3) Rep Day - connects students with their elected representatives for a virtual or in-person meeting

(4) CTRL-F - a module providing quick strategies students can use to investigate and evaluate information

(5) PoliTalks - supports educators in bringing political discussions to the classroom - Materials are free with
registration, and programming is designed for grades 5-12

(6) Democracy Bootcamp - professional development conference for teachers designed to improve their
democratic engagement and delivery of CIVIX programming

This mobile training program provides specialized critical care skill training to STARS crews and other emergency care providers. The first mobile program of its kind in North America, it features a human patient simulator which replicates complex medical and traumatic problems over and over again. It offers medical personnel the opportunity to test and practice their reactions and skills, leading to a high degree of familiarity and confidence.

The mannequin: speaks and breathes, blinks and has reactive pupils, has a heartbeat and a pulse
accurately mirrors human responses to such procedures as CPR, intravenous medication, intubation, ventilation and catheterization.

The mannequins have been installed in four motorhomes, creating large mobile emergency rooms. Additionally, STARS has a wireless mannequin that can be transported in a specially-modified SUV. This mannequin can be used in a variety of environments including hospital emergency rooms, classrooms, and mock accidents scenes.
