Students in Mathematics 6/7/8 work in mixed-grade groups to determine a “Top 5” list of concepts from the course based on provided criteria developed over the course of the year. Students choose a format in which to share their “Top 5” including rationale for why each concept connects to mathematics outside of the classroom. Ultimately, students present their conclusions in an attempt to convince the panel that their “Top 5” is the most deserving of entering the Mathematics Hall of Fame. I decided to use mixed-grade groups for this project in an attempt to encourage more rich conversation as students need to explain concepts in order to convince their peers of their importance. The timing of this project at the end of the year also allows the work to serve as review for final written evaluations.

The Trans-Canadian Research and Environmental Education (TREE) project is a citizen science program where students from across Canada join with researchers from the Mistik Askîwin Dendrochronology Lab (MAD Lab) to learn about the stories trembling aspen trees tell and how a synchrotron can be a tool to tell that story. Join us as we explore this new area in research and learn about environments across Canada!
From a scientific perspective with TREE, trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) are a species of tree that is abundant throughout most of Canada. They also tolerate, even thrive, with much higher levels of toxins in their soil than most other species of trees and can potentially be used to remediate contaminated sites.
From an educational perspective, learning about the life and nutrient cycles of trees, nutrients in soil, and tracking effects on trees over time provides a wealth of opportunity for student education. The TREE program connects with curriculum across several subject areas and grade levels. It provides an interdisciplinary learning experience for students, including local Indigenous knowledge related to the trees, history, and the environment.

Unarchived examines “traditional” archives in British Columbia, those rooted in European colonial practices upheld by government, academic and other settler institutions. Records preserved in such repositories centre and privilege the stories of the dominant culture, perpetuating the re-telling of biased histories. This film challenges typical archival practice and encourages the viewer to question what is not being told, to make space for diverse voices and to build capacity for alternative archives.

Summary: Infographics have become a very popular method of sharing information. Students learned how to read infographics by looking at various examples of basic graphics and then expanded to a wide variety of methods used to show information on different topics. The theme that was being focused on was An Eye on the Natural and Technological Environment. Because of rotation of themes, I ended up with three grades doing the same theme, however they covered their own outcomes for their grade as can be seen above.

Summary I began my 21st Century journey this year hoping to create a classroom blog. My main goal was to allow parents a glimpse into their child’s daily life at school. I pictured students blogging daily about what we were up to in class and parents commenting and asking questions regularly. This, unfortunately, was not the case. I encountered problem after problem until the idea just fizzled by the wayside. So, on to the next idea! A few years ago, I attended a session by a teacher who was doing stop-motion animation with her class. I latched onto that idea and quickly purchased the iMotion app. I started making videos with my five year old son (who loved it!!!) and soon felt comfortable enough to introduce the technology to my class. The students were very excited to try it! We had only one problem… we only had one ipad. Several students got the opportunity to create a stop-motion animation as part of a book report project. (They did a stop-motion animation in place of creating a diorama.) However, most students did not get a chance to try it due to time limitations with only one ipad. Out of the students who did not get to create a stop-motion animation, a couple of them asked if they could create a digital diorama using Minecraft. Several other students overheard and wanted to do one too. I was curious to see what they would do so I allowed them to try it. The results were fantastic!!! We connected each students’ personal device to the SmartBoard to present their dioramas to the rest of the class. (We learned that we can’t use the airwatch to have a “live” diorama on the SmartBoard, but we fixed that problem by taking still pictures (screenshots) of the scene and displaying it that way.)
